Faculty Bulletin ? Blog Archive ? profile: Melanie Carter

Melanie Carter is Senior Instructor in the Department of Rhetoric and Composition, and a 2012 winner of the AUC Excellence in Teaching Award. But along with her reputation on campus as an excellent teacher, Melanie has had considerable success as a poet. In the following interview, she shares her thoughts on both the craft of teaching and the craft of writing, along with describing her early background in journalism (including an uncle who won the Pulitzer Prize).

Q: Since you recently won the AUC Excellence in Teaching Award, let?s start by talking about your teaching philosophy. What makes you so successful in the classroom?

I imagine I try to do what many of us aim for: to open up possibilities. To urge students beyond the formulas they?ve been taught to rely on. I want them to understand how altering our approach to language can alter the way we see the world. In RHET 101 I have asked students to write creation myths to explain where their writing comes from, for example. And I do an exercise in the Poetry Writing class in which students build metaphor out of elements chosen at random. A student might select a couple of index cards and end up with bird and ocean, for instance. The exercise, then, is to begin to question ways they might be similar. Both could be blue, certainly. But might a tiny bird hold inside itself a wisdom? A sort of oceanic depth? Could its flight be seen as a wave? And if so, a wave of what? It?s a simple activity, but once we begin nudging at possibilities, we realize nothing in the world is as mere as we thought it was. And, maybe more importantly, we?ve had a hand in showing that?and in creating it differently. When realizations like this happen early on, in 101, for example, I think it can help students see that their writing really does matter. Their minds can bring forth extraordinary changes.

?

Q: You are highly regarded as a poet. Was this an early child hood interest, or something you picked up later?

As a child, I had wanted to write fiction. I remember lying in bed, thinking of the same opening image of my novel, over and over again. Poetry is what I turned to, well after childhood, when I realized the ?stories? I was trying to write were really moments or ideas being explored.

?

Q: Who are your favorite poets, and why?

I love poets whose work shows a love of language?those who emphasize the musicality of it, or truly play with intricacies of meaning. Wallace Stevens won?t come as a surprise, then. Other favorites are Lucie Brock-Broido, Robin Behn, and Jack Gilbert, a poet whose language is more quietly dazzling.

?

Q: Your first degree was in Journalism, from the University of Florida. Your degrees after that were in English (University of South Carolina) and Creative Writing (University of Alabama). Did these changing areas of study reflect changing interests on your part? If so, then what led to these changes? For example, why did you decide not to be a journalist?

I had an extraordinary model in my uncle, a journalist who won a Pulitzer for his editorials on the civil rights movement. I learned from him that words mattered, and that you didn?t have to be strident. You could move people with beauty, with the care you took with those words. Because of him, journalism was my entry point. But I realized early on that I don?t have a reporter?s personality. So, after working in the newspaper business for several years, I returned to graduate school to study what I truly loved?literature and creative writing?and on the way, discovered that I love teaching, too.

Q: For several years you taught in Japan, at a school for the blind. Tell us about how this happened, and what this experience was like.

I was in the country as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching program. My first year, I worked at an academic boys? school. In my second year, I spent part of each week at the school for the blind. It felt like a gift. Classes were very small; one had only three students. So, it was possible to really speak to one another, and for the communication to be meaningful. What?s funny is that I?d originally become interested in Japan because of the intricacies and beauty of its writing systems. Looking back, the school for the blind may have been where my interest in sound began.

?

Q: What made you decide to come to AUC?

I?d been very interested in the Middle East, but knew almost nothing about it. The closest I?d come was a couple of transit nights in Pakistan on the way to Nepal.? So, an interest in the region made me look at AUC, initially. When I realized I would be able to come and teach writing, though? A dream come true.

?

Q: Has your experience living in Egypt shaped your poetry writing in any way? If so, how?

What I can say with certainty is that it will shape it. And I imagine that will happen after I leave, when Egypt becomes a place that I can turn back to and explore and in some way reinvent.? Writing about a place after leaving it allows for remembering, for keeping a time and place in place. But it also allows the place to evolve, and for the artist to have a hand in the path that evolution takes. I suppose it?s also a nice way to be able to live forever in a place you?ve loved.

?

Q: Many people write poetry as a kind of private hobby, but you seem to have had some solid public success. I noticed that you have been a finalist for the Pushcart Prize and the Yale Series of Younger Poets. This leads me to a more general question about the field. How do you keep track of the best poetry being written today? Do you do this mostly through reading journals? Books? By attending conferences? Attending readings wherever you can?

Friends will send books or recommend poets. But one of my favorite pastimes is simply to stand in a bookstore and pull volumes off the shelf. It?s especially fun to do this when traveling, since the language on the street and the English translation on the page seem to bump up against each other in an interesting way. I?ll also say that I don?t limit myself to finding poetry in the poetry section. I?m sometimes happiest when I discover it disguised as a novel or book of essays.

?

Q: It seems that some poets work by inspiration and others by regular labor. The Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke tells us that after he became the secretary for the sculptor Rodin, he shifted from the method of inspiration to Rodin?s own method of patient scheduled work.? It seems, then, that the same poet might use both methods during the same lifetime. What about your own method of writing? And has it changed over time?

It hasn?t changed at all, though not for lack of my trying. A poem typically will come to me as a phrase first, or occasionally an image. That can accompany me for days, weeks, during which I?ll hear the phrase over and over. Eventually, it will drive me to sit down and work with the idea on paper. I keep various lists of words that I like for one reason or another, too, and I often use these to play with possibilities.

?

Q: What about your favored time of day for writing? And location: do you write best at home, or elsewhere?

At home, before dawn, especially for beginning a poem. It?s a time when things aren?t yet solidified, when boundaries of buildings and of reason haven?t fully materialized. So, a time when a path that appears necessitated for a phrase or a poem is more easily sidestepped. And for the structure to be created, original to the piece.

?

Q: On some level poetry is even more intensely personal than prose writing. When the words first come out, I would guess that they feel extremely private. At what stage are you usually willing to share poems with others? Do you let them ?cool off? a bit first, or do you share them pretty quickly? And when you do share them, is it usually with fellow poets, or is it more likely to be with close friends?

Private is an interesting word. I?m not certain I would have thought of it that way. I won?t share something until I feel it?s close to being finished, and that can take a while. I write slowly, not editing exactly, but building by way of examining the various sides of each block, moving words around, looking at connections among images and ideas. Often, I am working with the notion of possibility or potential: If such and such, Because such and such? so the working out of the poem is also a working out of logic.? I?ve come to terms with not being a particularly linear thinker, but I know that my reader may need a clarity I?ve not articulated yet. Once I feel that is in place, I tend to share with friends who, if not poets, are certainly writers. And I share based on their potential interest in the topic.

?

Q: If you lived your life again and had to choose a different profession, what do you think it would be?

It?s difficult to answer because I like this one so much. That said, I am interested in both creation and Creation. In the various ways science and spirituality intersect. So? a quantum physicist perhaps? Or a Buddhist nun?!

Q: Perhaps we should close by inviting you to tell us what you?re working on right now. Any big projects?

It is more a theme, an idea, that I?ve been working with and watching evolve over a number of years now. Earlier, I mentioned my interest in sound. My current pieces explore the idea of sound as something that can be altered by a listener. There are notions there about power, creativity, the nature of reality and where it is constructed. It?s enormously fun to think about? and really, could I be in a place with a greater wealth of material than Cairo?!

ESRB now supports Windows 8, introduces cost-free questionnaire for rating digital games

ESRB adds Windows 8, introduces costfree questionnaire for rating digital games

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board has a huge responsibility -- to rate and regulate the entire medium of video games -- but only has so many resources with which to do so. With the rise of digital delivery, it's become increasingly difficult to fulfill the task of rating every single title that comes out, but the ESRB is betting on a new initiative that'll help streamline that process. The new "Digital Rating Service" employs an online questionnaire to determine a wide variety of criteria, beyond just age-appropriateness: content, interactivity, and privacy settings (whether or not it shares your data). As the name implies, the DRS specifically applies to digital delivery services: Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network (on PS3 and Vita), PlayStation Certified devices, Nintendo's eShop (on the Wii, DS, and 3DS), and Windows 8.

That last one sounds new because it is -- Windows 8 games are now part of the ESRB's rating system. In addition to the new initiative and new platform, the ESRB is also adding more guidance to its game ratings. "Shares Info," "Shares Locations," and "Users Interact" are all now part of ESRB guidance, per the changing nature of digital, portable games. The ESRB says its new system will help to streamline its rating process for both itself and game creators, and this will resultant in faster ratings for consumers.

Goldilocks & the Five Bras: A True & Co ... - The Lingerie Addict

Today?s guest post is by Amanda, a Lingerie Addict reader who lives in Staten Island, NY with two cats and her husband. She writes about books, Doctor Who, and other things she likes at TheKeyLime.tumblr.com. She also enjoys beautiful lingerie and is (slowly) expanding her collection. You can reach Amanda at TheKeyLime1@gmail.com.

True & Co.

I don?t remember where I first heard of True & Co., but I was definitely intrigued by their concept. By answering a few questions on their website, they claim to be able to match you with perfectly fitting bras. You pick three, they pick two, and a few days later, there are five new bras on your doorstep. Keep what fits, send back what doesn?t. You?re only charged for the bras you keep (which are mostly around $45 each).

Sounds good, right?

I have been in the market for new bras for a while. Well, rather, I should say I?ve been in the market for a different bra for a while. I have a lot of bras, but they are all pretty much the same. Every single bra that I own has a molded ?T-shirt? demi cup. Six of them (the four on the left and two not pictured) are the same style and size bra from Victoria?s Secret.

Current Bras

When I find something I like, I tend to get multiple of it because what if I can?t replace it? For instance, that red bra on the right is the last of a brigade. I once had five of that style bra in various colors. One day I went to replace my dying black one and alas, I could not find that style. I?ve worn them to shreds. Old Red is all that remains. The Victoria?s Secret bras are an OK replacement, but they?re just not the same.

But as my birthday approached I kept thinking more and more about True & Co., which would force me to bust out of my molded cup. On Tuesday, September 25th, I took the plunge and put in an order.

I picked three bras: Juna by Panache in black (normal band size, one cup up), Cool Cotton by Claudette in white (normal band and cup size), and the pretty floral Enchanted Bloom by Blush (normal band and cup size). True & Co. picked two more, but I wouldn?t know which ones until they arrived. Three days later, it?s Friday and there?s a box from True & Co. on my doorstep. Yipee! Let the games begin!

Inside the Box

Hello, Ladies!

True & Co picked out the Christelle (a band size down, cup size up) and Marielle (normal band & cup size), both by Felina. I tried everything on. I adjusted straps. I pushed and pulled. I put on shirts. And I?m keeping?

One bra.

What happened?

Juna

Juna from Panache (which you can see got a little squished in the box) was the only molded cup bra. It fit well enough, except the gore was DIGGING into my sternum. I?m pretty sure bras aren?t supposed to make you go ?ouch?.

Enchanted Bloom

Enchanted Bloom from Blush looked pretty, but it didn?t really shape me in any way and was kinda itchy.

Marielle

This is the Marielle from Felina and one of True & Co.?s picks. Meh. It fit alright but not great. And at $45, I want something I really love.

Cool Cotton

Cool Cotton from Claudette fit fine, and I thought about keeping it but, again, it just doesn?t really wow me. It kind of reminds me of a sports bra ? it feels very functional.

Christelle

And here is Christelle from Felina. Fits great, feels great, and looks super duper sexy! This is definitely not something I would normally pick out for myself (and I didn?t ? it?s one of True & Co.?s picks), and it?s a band size smaller/cup size larger than my normal bras.

The four other bras are back in the box and ready to go. There is a return shipping label so no worries there. I rated the bras on their website and have been charged for the Christelle.

Ultimately, I enjoyed this experience. However, I cannot really attest to their magical fitting matrix. I?ve been measured before and am fairly confident that I am in the correct bra size. And True & Co. must have agreed because three of the five bras were the size I normally wear.

But for me, True & Co. wasn?t about solving the mystery of ?Am I wearing the wrong size bra?? It was to answer the question ?Are there other style bras out there I should be wearing??

And the answer is yes ? I now own a beautiful bra that is totally unlike anything I have owned before. Thus concludes the True & Co. experiment.

Has anyone else shopped with True & Co.? How was your experience?

Associated Press Issues Misleading Defense of ... - Immigration Impact

Unlike lawyers and policymakers, journalists have an obligation to use language that ordinary people understand. Although the practice is generally helpful, it can sometimes result in oversimplification, or sacrificing accuracy for the sake of clarity. A perfect example is the memo issued by the Associated Press last week endorsing use of the term ?illegal immigrant.?

Calling an immigrant ?illegal? before the conclusion of immigration proceedings is like calling a criminal defendant ?guilty? before a jury has rendered a verdict.

At first glance, the memo?authored by Tom Kent, a high-ranking AP editor?appears driven by a dispassionate analysis of immigration law. To Kent, terms like ?unauthorized? and ?undocumented? obscure what he calls a ?legal reality,? i.e., that certain immigrants are present in the United States in violation of law. Without ?the fundamental right to be in the United States,? the memo says, ?their presence is illegal.?

In truth, immigration law is much more complicated than Kent suggests. Just as suspected criminals are presumed innocent until proven guilty (and thus referred to as ?alleged? or ?accused?), noncitizens charged with violating the immigration laws have a right to remain in the country until they receive a final order of removal. Last year, judges terminated more than 25,000 removal proceedings for lack of sufficient evidence, and granted relief from removal?such as asylum?in more than 30,000 cases. Thus, calling an immigrant ?illegal? before the conclusion of ?immigration proceedings is like calling a criminal defendant ?guilty? before a jury has rendered a verdict.

As importantly, many immigrants are authorized to remain and work in the United States?and are not considered ?unlawfully present? under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)?despite being in violation of the immigration laws. For example, immigrants with pending applications for asylum and permanent residence are eligible for employment authorization, as are those granted deferred action or a stay of removal. Indeed, if determining unlawful presence was as simple as Kent suggests, it?s doubtful that federal officials would have felt compelled to issue such extensive guidance on the subject.

(Side note: the memo also misleadingly instructs reporters to describe beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as having ?temporary resident status,? a phrase the INA ?uses in reference to farmworkers who qualified under a 1986 legalization program, and which implies that deferred action is akin to legal immigration status.)

To the AP?s credit, its stylebook instructs reporters not to refer to ?illegals? or ?illegal aliens,? and permits them to use more neutral descriptors, such as ?living in the country without legal permission.? Kent?s memo also says certain noncitizens should not be described as ?illegal immigrants??such as youths brought to the country by their parents (because they did not consciously immigrate themselves) and those whose status is in current legal dispute?and encourages reporters to explain individual immigrants? stories rather than rely on labels.

In making these (sensible) concessions, however, the memo undermines its very defense of the term in question. If a reporter?s job is to report facts objectively, it is hard to see why one should rely on a term that is often legally inaccurate, may encourage readers to make sweeping generalizations, and can offend the dignity of those they describe.

CIT Reports Q3 Net Loss of $305MM; NBV up 16% - Monitordaily

CIT reported a net loss for the quarter ended September 30, 2012 of $305 million, compared to a net loss of $32.8 million for the third quarter of 2011. The current period includes charges of $471 million related to the redemption of $4.6 billion of high cost debt, while the year-ago period included charges of $169 million related to the redemption of the $3 billion first lien term loan and approximately $1.5 billion of high cost debt.

Pre-tax income excluding debt redemption charges was $170 million, down modestly from $176 million in the year-ago quarter. The net loss for the nine months ended September 30, 2012 was $822 million, including debt redemption charges of $1.4 billion, compared to a net loss of $17 million, including debt redemption charges of $0.4 billion, in the comparable 2011 period.

CIT said funded new business volume of $2.2 billion increased 16% from the prior-year quarter, while committed new business volume of $2.5 billion increased 7% reflecting strong increases in Corporate Finance and Vendor Finance. Compared to the second quarter, volume decreased in Corporate Finance and Vendor Finance, as well as in Transportation Finance, which had fewer scheduled deliveries. Trade Finance factoring volume of $6.4 billion increased 8% sequentially, reflecting seasonal trends, but declined by approximately 6% from the year-ago quarter.

?We achieved several strategic milestones this quarter that will lower our funding costs and better position CIT for future profitability,? said John Thain, chairman and chief executive officer. ?We eliminated the last of our $31 billion of restructuring-related debt, grew commercial assets for the fourth consecutive quarter, and exceeded $3.5 billion in Internet deposits at CIT Bank. We will continue to focus on achieving our financial targets as we meet the needs of our small business and middle market clients.?

Vendor Finance

Financing and leasing assets grew to $5.2 billion, representing increases of 3% from June 30, 2012 and 7% from a year ago. Funded new business volume was $705 million, a 9% increase from the prior-year quarter but down sequentially. Essentially all U.S. funded volume in the current quarter was originated by CIT Bank. Non-accrual loans and delinquencies declined from a year ago and were essentially unchanged from June 30, 2012. Net charge-offs rose modestly from prior periods due in part to lower recoveries.

Transportation Finance

Excluding accelerated FSA interest expense, pre-tax earnings rose 35% from the prior-year quarter and 4% sequentially primarily reflecting asset growth and lower funding costs. Equipment utilization remained strong with 99% of commercial air and 98% of rail equipment on lease or under a commitment at September 30, 2012. The sequential quarter increase in provision for credit losses reflects the establishment of reserves on a loan secured by commercial aircraft that was placed on non-accrual in September 2012.

Financing and leasing assets grew approximately $1.7 billion from September 30, 2011, and $0.2 billion from June 30, 2012, to $14.0 billion. New business volume of $563 million reflects the addition of six aircraft and over 1,700 railcars to our operating lease portfolio, and nearly $200 million of loans. All of the current quarter?s loan volume and over 95% of the rail volume was originated by CIT Bank. All but two of the 18 aircraft scheduled for delivery in the next 12 months and over 95% of the approximately 5,800 railcars scheduled for delivery through December 2013 have lease commitments.

Non-accrual loans declined to $256 million from $316 million at June 30, 2012 and $674 million a year ago, and net charge-offs were $5 million, down significantly from the prior-year quarter and down slightly from the second quarter of 2012.

Getting Scuba Diving Courses For Scuba Diving In Malta Today

Learning a new skill while you are on vacation can help you enjoy your time away even more. Taking scuba diving courses is a great way to enhance your relaxation and enjoyment of your holidays especially near any large body of water. Once you complete the training, the skills can be used anywhere.

Diving is a great sport that is enjoyed by many people for many different reasons. Some people even do this as their job, diving under the surface for exploration, welding and a number of other tasks. Deciding to use this skill for pure enjoyment is another matter of course.

Learning how to do this is very important. There are many different dangers associated with diving that you must understand. When you dive deep under the surface of the water, there are many things that you must remember when you begin your ascent back to the surface such as taking your time and not coming up too quickly.

As you learn the basic skills, you will also learn about the importance of never diving alone. It is important to dive in pairs to insure the safety of both divers. This way when one diver gets in trouble, someone is there to help or to go signal for help depending on the situation.

Building your skills is something that you do over time of course. You will not become an expert after just a few classes. However as you continue to dive, you will continue to build your skills.

One may consider taking advanced classes to learn more about the sport as well. Even if you plan to only use the sport as a hobby, knowing more about it can be very helpful. You will learn about different options that will be available as you build your skill level.

Some dives are intended for beginners and keep the people closer to the surface, thus avoiding many of the complications that might arise if you stay under too long. Of course, everyone knows that surfacing needs to be done slowly, but understanding how to gauge this is important. Building the ability to know when its time to surface based on your oxygen tanks is very important.

Many people who take scuba diving courses first need to get used to the equipment. It is not uncommon for people to struggle with the breathing system and have to build up the ability to use it. When you want to go diving, you need to be properly prepared.

Scuba diving in Malta offers a range of beautiful views under the surface. Whether you are planning on taking pictures or just exploring, there are many things that can be seen. The atmosphere under the surface is calming and relaxing for most who try it.

Where did all the finance bloggers go? - Abnormal Returns ...

  • abnormalreturns
  • October 23rd, 2012

In preparation for another post I just went through my RSS reader reviewing my list of investment bloggers that I follow. I noticed a large number of bloggers who for whatever reason have stopped blogging.* There has always been a fair amount of turnover in the blogging ranks, but for whatever reason it seems like the number of active, quality finance bloggers seems to be in decline.

It could be the case that more bloggers are ducking behind paywalls and subscriptions newsletters. For some time now I have seen a rise in the representation of professional blogs in the daily linkfest.? In contrast at least among professional economists it seems like blogging is in some ascendency. Nobel prize winners are just as likely to blog as their colleagues are.

A number of explanations come to mind:

  1. Other outlets for expression like StockTwits, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. have displaced blogging;
  2. The economy is getting better and bloggers have found full-time gigs;
  3. The markets are such a mess that erstwhile blogger have found better things to do with their time;
  4. Professional bloggers have displaced the efforts of amateurs;
  5. Insert your best explanation ___________.

For better or worse the benefits of blogging really only accrue over the long run. Of course anybody can make a splash with a controversial blog post or two but it takes a while to really see results. I suppose the same could be said for investing as well.

I hope that that this is just a cyclical low versus some some sort of secular decline in investing. Am I missing something? If you have some insight please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

*I don?t want to single out individual bloggers because people stop blogging for all sorts of good reasons.

Bisnar | Chase: Motorcycle Mentorship Program Promotes Fun Responsible Riding

California motorcycle accident lawyer welcomes the establishment of more groups like the Coyote Motorcycle Mentorship Program, which aims to create a supportive environment of responsible and enjoyable motorcycle riding for less experienced drivers. According to an Oct. 10 news report in the Blackanthem Military News, the program does so by bringing experienced and novice riders together.

Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) October 22, 2012

With temperatures dropping quickly and sharply in North Dakota, the "Coyotes" of Division West's 5th Armored Brigade are considering putting their motorcycles into so-called winter hibernation, an Oct. 10 news report in the Blackanthem Military News states. While doing so, the soldier bikers of the brigade's 2nd Battalion 361st Combat Support Regiment completed a motorcycle safety rider for the quarter as part of their unit's Motorcycle Mentorship Program, the report states.

According to the article, the program establishes voluntary installation-level motorcycle clubs in which seasoned riders and novice riders can create a support system that encourages safety and fun. The program, for example, includes classes that educate riders about pre-ride checklists such as checking tires, wheels, cables, lights, oil and fluids. The group even partners with civilian businesses to provide safety training, the report states.

It is heartening to see this unit's focus and commitment to safe motorcycle riding, says John Bisnar, founder of the Bisnar | Chase personal injury law firm. "The idea of grouping experienced and inexperienced riders is a great idea. Not only can they learn from each other, but a group such as this reinforces the importance of safety among all riders while keeping a fun atmosphere going."

Recent studies conducted by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center document sharp increases in the numbers and rates of motorcycle fatalities among service members, according to a July 6, 2009 report in the Army Times. The number of service members injured and hospitalized in motorcycle accidents increased by more than 100 from 2007 to 2008 and deaths increase by 18 over the same period, the report states. According to the report, these numbers have only increased since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with mental health workers expressing concerns that service members on motorcycles may be seeking to recapture the rush of war while taking more risks.

Organizations such as the Coyotes within the military and programs such as the Motorcycle Mentorship Program can certainly help keep our off-duty service members safe, Bisnar says. "These service members need all the support and training they need to ensure that they are safe while enjoying what can be an enjoyable and exhilarating hobby.?

Russian brochure depicts migrants as tools

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? It was intended as a friendly guide to Russia for labor migrants from Central Asia, but instead it turned into an insult. The brochure with practical advice on how to deal with border guards, police and other authorities was illustrated with depictions of migrant workers as paint brushes, brooms and other tools of low-skilled work.

The anger exploded this week. The government of Tajikistan formally urged Russian authorities to remove the book from circulation, and representatives of the Uzbek community voiced their outrage.

Activists see the book, published in Russia's second largest city, as a reflection of the discrimination against the growing number of impoverished, mostly Muslim, migrants in Russia who are working construction, cleaning offices, sweeping the streets and collecting the garbage.

"It's xenophobia pure and clear," said Lev Ponomaryov, a veteran Russian human rights defender. "They show residents of St. Petersburg as humans and depict migrants as construction tools."

Even though "A Labor Migrant's Handbook" was promoted on a city government website, authorities denied any connection to the publication when outrage erupted after bloggers discovered it and publicized it online last week. A non-government organization that published 10,000 copies of the book in the Russian, Uzbek, Kyrgyz and Tajik languages insisted it just wanted to provide useful information about everyday life in Russia.

"We didn't mean to insult anyone with this brochure ? on the contrary, we aimed to help labor migrants learn about their rights and avoid getting into trouble in this city," said Gleb Panfilov, deputy head of the Look into the Future group that published the book.

Panfilov said his group had people from the ex-Soviet nations of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan look at the proofs prior to publication and received no complaints. He said he couldn't understand the public outrage now, many months after its release.

But in a country where dark-complexioned migrants are commonly victims of hate crimes and frequently live in miserable conditions, others are not surprised by the anger.

Alimzhan Khaidarov, the leader of the Uzbek community in St. Petersburg, said he was offended by the brochure. "They compared us, representatives of the ancient Uzbek culture, with construction tools. And not only us, but also representatives of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan," Khaidarov told The Associated Press.

He said rights groups representing migrants from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan will consider filing a lawsuit against the publisher.

On Monday, the Tajik government denounced the brochure as insulting and asked Russian authorities to stop its distribution, according to the Interfax news agency.

More than 1 million of the impoverished ex-Soviet nation's 7-million population live and work in Russia, and money they sent home totaled around $3 billion in 2011, equivalent to around half of the mountainous nation's gross domestic product. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan also have been major exporters of labor to Russia.

Uzbek activist, Suratbek Abdurakhimov, called the publication an ethical mistake. "They should have consulted with representatives of the diasporas before the publication and found a more appropriate way to give the information," he said. He added that he was against giving the issue too much publicity to avoid fueling xenophobic sentiments among local residents.

"Local people are already to a certain extent irritated with migrants. Why irritate them more?," he asked.

Though hate attacks in Russia peaked in 2008, when 115 people were killed and nearly 500 wounded, according to Sova, an independent watchdog, the numbers are still high. A police crackdown on neo-Nazi groups helped stem the tide, but Sova said 20 people were killed and at least 130 others were wounded in racially motivated crimes last year.

The labor migrants often suffer from horrific labor conditions, a complete lack of social protection and medical care.

"The government has done nothing to protect their rights," Ponomaryov said. "There has been nothing but words."

PFT: Will NFL bid Aloha to the Pro Bowl?

SiriusXM Town Hall With NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell And Michael Strahan On SiriusXM NFL RadioGetty Images

The Pro Bowl remains on the endangered species list.

In what hardly will classify as the most dramatic revelation of the year, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday at a town hall meeting sponsored by SiriusXM radio that the Pro Bowl could be abandoned, eventually.

?It?s really tough to force competition and after a long season to ask those guys to go out and play at the same level that they play is pretty tough,? Goodell said.? ?And I made it very clear last year because I really thought the quality of the game last year was way below standards and if we?re going to play like that we should just eliminate the game.?

He?s right.? No player who has made it through a long season of games that count healthy enough to play another game has interest in playing hard in a game that doesn?t count.

So get rid of it.? Be done with it.? Yes, it will result in a lost opportunity to hit the cash register, given that plenty of folks will watch bad football involving good players.? But if it doesn?t do justice to the shield, then it should be abandoned, permanently.

The problem is that the players still want to play the game ? since it entails a free week in Hawaii and, in its current form, a game of two-hand touch in full pads.? And as long as people keep watching it, it will be hard to stop playing it.

?I was leaning that way,? Goodell said.? ?The players asked if they could take another crack at it and they wanted to try to work to make the game more competitive.? Obviously, I support that but if we can?t accomplish that kind of a standard I?m inclined not to play it any longer.?

Thus, this year?s edition could go a long way toward determining the future of the game.? Which means that even more of us will tune in to see just how much better than really bad it will be.

Which will make it even harder to pull the plug, now matter how badly it needs to be pulled.

Key Facts About the Military Budget

?Governor Romney?s plan calls for?$2 trillion in additional military spending that the military hasn?t asked for.? ?President Obama, First Presidential Debate, October 3, 2012

The President has repeatedly attacked Governor Romney?s plan to restore baseline military budgets to roughly 4 percent of domestic product as unnecessary spending that the Joint Chiefs of Staff don?t want. In the vice presidential debate, Joe Biden went even farther, claiming it was the service leaders who ?made the recommendation first? to make the latest round of cuts, which total almost $500 billion. ?That?s a fact,? asserted the Vice President.

No, it?s not.

The fact is that this round of defense cuts was first proposed by President Obama on April 13, 2011. In an attempt to preempt the budget-cutting fervor of the House of Representatives? Republican leadership, he said he would trim roughly $400 billion from the defense plan that he had submitted to Congress in February 2011. The President did not even inform Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who was set to retire that June, about the proposed cuts.

And no wonder. Secretary Gates had already declared his opposition to such an approach: ?Suggestions to cut defense by this or that large number have largely become exercises in simple math, divorced from serious considerations of capabilities, risk, and the level of resources needed to protect this country?s security and vital interests around the world.?

And so President Obama has, conveniently, rewritten the standard of military strategy to conform to his defense-budget-cutting desires. But as The Washington Post has observed, the President?s defense guidance rests ?upon the dubious assumption that there will be no need to fight land wars in the coming decade? The shrinking Navy, in turn, is at odds with Mr. Obama?s strategy of building up forces in Asia against a belligerent China.?

The Post also rightly pointed out that Governor Romney is simply proposing to ?fully fund the four-year plan laid out by the Defense Department.?

In other words: This ?additional? spending previously was asked for by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and recommended to Congress by President Obama himself.

As commander-in-chief, President Obama has the prerogative to define U.S. defense strategy downward. But he does not have the prerogative to define defense facts. And he certainly should not hide behind the Joint Chiefs of Staff when he does so.

X-ray technology improves early detection of pulmonary disease

This press release is available in German.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is considered the fourth most common cause of death in the United States. Usually the precursor to this life-threatening lung disease is a chronic bronchitis. Partially destroyed alveoli and an over-inflation of the lungs, known as emphysema, are serious side effects. However, the subtle differences in the tissue are barely discernable in standard X-ray images.

In addition to the conventional X-ray images, the Munich scientists analyzed the radiation scattered by the tissue. From these data they calculated detailed images of the lungs of the investigated mice. Using such images, physicians can see not only if a patient is diseased but also how strongly which parts of the lung are affected.

"Especially in early stages of the disease, identification, precise quantification and localization of emphysema through the new technology would be very helpful", says Professor Maximilian Reiser, head of the Institute for Clinical Radiology at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. "We hope that one day this technology will improve COPD diagnosis and therapy, while avoiding the higher radiation exposure associated with high-resolution CT".

The procedure has been developed as part of the research work of the Cluster of Excellence Munich-Centre for Advanced Photonics (MAP) by physicists from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), physicians at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) and the Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC) of the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen.

For their experiments, the researchers used the Compact Light Source, a compact synchrotron radiation source of Lyncean Technologies Inc. (USA). In the future the Center for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA), a joint project of TUM and LMU on the Research Campus Garching, will develop new laser-driven x-ray sources.

In parallel, the research group led by Franz Pfeiffer, professor for Biomedical Physics at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen, works on the improvement of the x-ray scattering analysis to pave the way for its use with conventional X-ray machines.

Internet marketing SEO Consultants South Carolina - PDF

Internet marketing SEO Consultants South Carolina

Hello, I am Daniel Hucks and I want to share with you a little information about these exciting
times in internet marketing. Helping small to medium sized businesses such as yours is a
passion with me and I hope some of my enthusiasm has rubbed off on you. I represent WSI,
the world leader in internet marketing and I serve Richland, Lexington and Calhoun counties
in the midlands of South Carolina. Through my extensive and ongoing training in digital
marketing, email marketing, social media and website optimization, I am able to help
companies like yours increase lead generation, improve brand awareness and ultimately turn
prospects into customers with long term relationships.
It is amazing the impact a few words or navigational subtleties can have on the user
experience, isn't it? So, let me plant a few ideas in your mind that you personally can relate
to as a website visitor. Afterwards, you may decide that it would be right for us to talk more.

When you do a search through Google or some other engine, how many times do you initially
pick one of the sites at the top or on the right side- the ones that have been separated from
the rest of the pack? Those sites have paid to get that placement and that's one way to draw
traffic. It can be effective because many people go no further than those highlighted results.
How many times have you gone all the way down the first page and then on to the later
pages? I rarely have. If it's not apparent on page one, I usually change my search criteria.
Those folks have gotten to page one by search engine optimization. In a way, you can say
they've earned it.

Once you land on a site, how easy is it to understand how to get around? Internet users, by
and large, are scanners, not readers. It's been shown that visitors will leave in as short a time
as five seconds if content and navigation doesn't hold them right away. I know I've been
guilty of that. Have you sometimes gotten lost in the later pages and left out of frustration?
Maybe the content was out of date. Have you found what you were looking for but then you
haven't been able to execute whether it was to buy a product, download a white paper, or
join a mailing list? Sometimes, I've made it all the way through ordering and left because I
couldn't get them to take my money.

I could go on but I think you get the picture. In such cases, the website can actually be
working against its objective, costing its owners in ways they don't even know. Could that be
the case with your website? How would you know?
Maybe those aren't issues with you but you know you could do more to exploit the
information you could be capturing from your website traffic. This could be used to tailor
email campaigns, feedback surveys and be used with more traditional marketing. You could
also engage in real time interaction with customers and prospects. Maybe you'd identify new
markets. Can you see how any of this might separate you from the crowd and improve your
competitive advantage. Speaking of which, how sweet would it be to have this knowledge
about your competitors? Could you work with that?

Now we haven't even talked about social media and mobile computing. These are so big
we'll have to save them for another time. These can be your best friends or secret enemies.
Have you heard something today that has piqued your interest? If so, let's talk about it. By
being part of the WSI network, you not only have a knowledgeable local source to draw
upon; you also have best in class world leadership in internet marketing at your disposal.
Even so, our solutions are unique to our client's needs, not one size fits all and not all or
none. We work with you to develop an overall strategy, not just a list of things to try. We
measure and analyze results against desired outcomes.

Again, I'd love the opportunity to learn more about you, tell you more of what we have to offer
and, hopefully we'll decide we want to take this further.

The BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Computer Case Is the Perfect Compromise Between Design, Features, and Size

The BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Computer Case Is the Perfect Compromise Between Design, Features, and SizeChoosing a great case when building a computer is a tough decision, as you have to consider size, features, aesthetics. It's tough to find one solution that fulfills every need. The BitFenix Prodigy manages to pull it off.

The BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Computer Case Is the Perfect Compromise Between Design, Features, and SizeWhen I first built my hack mini, I stuck it in a diminutive Mini ITX case. The case came with an integrated power supply which died about a month ago and I had to quickly find a replacement. Fortunately, the BitFenix Prodigy recently came to market and I was pretty impressed by the specifications. Not only is the case beautiful, but it offers a ton of space and features that you normally wouldn't find in a Mini ITX form-factor. It offers room for five hard drives, an optical drive, a large graphics card, two PCI slots, and frontside USB 3.0. While it's a bit larger than your average Mini ITX case?you won't fit it in a slim media cabinet?it's still rather compact. The case sounded perfect so I called around until I found one about an hour drive away and immediately hopped in the car to get it.

I spent the rest of my afternoon transferring my hack mini into the BitFenix Prodigy. While the case wasn't quite as intuitive as I'd hoped, I only needed to consult the manual once to figure out how to safely remove the front panel to install the optical drive. Everything else was incredibly straightforward, and I was able to add a spare hard drive and a better optical drive now that I had the extra space. The interior made this all very easy because of how it's organized, and because of a number of special compartments I had no trouble managing cables. If you don't need a tiny form-factor, this is the case you should get for your next Mini-ITX build. It's fantastic, comes in both black and white, and is well worth the $80.
