COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? People who fled the most destructive fire in Colorado's history are being allowed temporary visits to the most devastated neighborhoods, and many will find that their homes were among the nearly 350 burned to the ground.

About 10,000 people remain evacuated, down from more than 30,000 at the peak of the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs.

On Sunday people whose homes were burned will be allowed to tour the affected areas. Authorities said some residences would be cordoned off with police tape, and people would not be allowed beyond that point.

The home of Janine Herbertson and her 15-year-old daughter, Tessa Konik, remained unburned amid 150 others that were destroyed, said Herbertson as they ate lunch Saturday outside a Red Cross shelter.

Even so, "I'm afraid to go on the tour tomorrow and see our neighborhood in ruins," she said.

The 26-square-mile fire was 45 percent contained late Saturday night. It was one of many burning across the West, including eight in Utah and a fast-growing blaze in Montana that forced residents in several small communities to leave.

On Saturday, firefighting crews were keeping a wary eye on weather that was becoming warmer and drier.

"The weather is making progress in a bad direction. Hotter, drier, with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winds will shift from one direction to another," said Incident Commander Rich Harvey.

About 1,200 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the Waldo Canyon fire, and authorities said they were confident they had built good fire lines in many areas to stop flames from spreading.

"Crews made progress all around the fire,'" said Harvey, who was cautiously optimistic. "The fire potential is still very, very high. It's extreme and explosive."

Two bodies were found in the ruins of one house, one of almost 350 destroyed in this city 60 miles south of Denver. The victims' names haven't been released. Police Chief Pete Carey said Saturday afternoon the approximately 10 people who had been unaccounted for had now been located.

Police did not expect to discover other victims in the rubble.

More than 150 National Guard soldiers and airmen helped Colorado Springs police staff roadblocks and patrol streets. Carey said Saturday the presence of military personnel will allow his department to resume normal police work in the rest of the city.

Evacuees Saturday filtered back into an unscathed neighborhood of winding streets and split-level homes within an easy walk of the burned area.

High school counselor Pat Allen and her husband, Vic Miller, were all smiles less than five minutes after returning to their tri-level home on a quiet cul-de-sac.

"I'm just wanting to kiss the house, dance with the neighbors", Allen said.

Their house didn't smell of smoke. Their electricity was out for two or three days but the popsicles in their freezer didn't melt, she said.

Around the corner, retiree Nina Apsey wandered in search of eight small, solar-powered lights that somebody had taken from her yard during the evacuation.

"I'm assuming it was vandalism," she said.

Prized possessions still piled into the Hyundai sport-utility vehicle in her garage included caribou antlers and antelope and deer head mounts. As flames bore down, she'd also taken a small ceramic cowboy statue. Her late husband taught her how to hunt. He resembled the cowboy, she said.

She wasn't too perturbed about her missing lights because nothing else was touched.

"If that's the worst that happened to me, I'm blessed," she said.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire that broke out on June 23, and which so far has cost $8.8 million to battle. Dangerous conditions had kept them from beginning their inquiry.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? Utah: Residents were sifting through the ashes of more than 50 houses destroyed by a central Utah wildfire. Homeowners were allowed to return Saturday to Indianola along Utah's scenic Route 89. In all, eight wildfires are burning across Utah.

? Montana: Authorities in eastern Montana ordered the evacuation of several communities Saturday as the Ash Creek Complex fires, which has burned more than 70 homes this week, consumed another 72 square miles. The blaze grew to 244 square miles overnight.

? Wyoming: A wind-driven wildfire in a sparsely populated area of southeastern Wyoming exploded from eight square miles to nearly 58 square miles in a single day, and an unknown number of structures have burned. About 200 structures were considered threatened.

? Idaho: A fast-moving 1,000-acre wildfire in eastern Idaho that destroyed 66 homes and 29 outbuildings was expected to be contained Saturday. Some 1,000 residents were evacuated; it was unclear when they would be allowed back.

? Colorado: The last evacuees from the High Park Fire in northern Colorado have been allowed to return home as crews get closer to full containment. The 136-square-mile fire killed one resident and destroyed 259 houses, a state record until the fire near Colorado Springs destroyed 346 homes. In western Colorado, the 18-square-mile Pine Ridge Fire was 10 percent contained.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551dn

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551dn ($899 direct) printed out our business applications suite at a near-record clip for a color laser, and its output quality is above average, making it suitable for any standard business need, including printing out basic marketing materials. This well-rounded printer (which also has a fairly low cost per printed page) is an easy pick as an Editors' Choice workhorse color printer for a smallish business with medium to heavy-duty printing needs.

The M551dn measures 15.8 by 20.2 by 19.8 inches (HWD), larger than you?d want to share a desk with, and weighs 76 pounds, so it is best to use two people to move it. Controls on the front panel next to the small, color LCD are minimal: Buttons for Home, OK, Cancel, and Help. The display?s color is used primarily to show ink cartridge levels.

Standard paper capacity is 600 sheets, split between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. The printer comes with an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. (A version without the duplexer, the M551n, is available from HP for $699.) An optional 500-sheet paper tray ($319 direct) is available, for a maximum paper capacity of 1,100 sheets. The M551xh ($1,399 direct) adds the second 500-sheet tray as standard, plus an encrypted 250-GB hard drive.

The M551DN offers USB and Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over an Ethernet connection using a computer running Windows Vista.

Print Speed

I timed the M551DN on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 9.0 pages per minute (ppm). That's a bit short of our record (9.5 ppm) for a color laser, and a very good speed considering its 33 page-per-minute rated speed for both color and black-and-white printing that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.

The Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN ($649 direct, 4 stars), with a rated speed of 31 pages per minute for monochrome and 26 for color, took more than twice as long to finish the same tests, at an effective 4.5 ppm, while we timed the OKI C610DN ($789 list, 4 stars), rated at 34 pages per minute for monochrome and 32 for color printing, at an effective 6.7 ppm.

Output Quality

The M551DN?s overall output quality is above average, thanks to very good graphics and photo quality. Text quality is typical for a laser, which is to say good enough for any business use short of demanding desktop publishing applications that use very small fonts.

With graphics, colors were bright and looked reasonably true. Some black backgrounds weren?t quite as dark as I would have liked, and some very thin colored lines against black backgrounds could have been sharper, but there were no other issues worth mentioning. The graphics are fine for printing out PowerPoint presentations, and I?d feel comfortable handing the output out to clients or colleagues I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality was slightly above par. Colors looked slightly off in a couple of prints, but most approached true photo quality. Taken together, the text, graphics, and photos should be suitable for simple marketing materials like handouts or trifold brochures, or for real estate handouts showing photos of properties.

Running Costs

The M551DN has reasonably low running costs of 1.8 cents per monochrome page and 13 cents per color page. These trump the 2.8 cents per monochrome page and 13.9 cents of the Xerox 6280DN, while lagging the OKI C610's per-page costs of 1.5 and 10.9 cents per monochrome and color pages, respectively.

The HP M551DN offers a winning combination of fast speed, above-par output quality, and a reasonably low cost per page. It brings enough to the table to make it an Editors' Choice as a workhorse color printer for smaller offices with medium to heavy-duty printing demands. The OKI C610DN has lower running costs and better paper handling options, but is slower and lags on output quality.

At the end of 2011, the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN was officially discontinued, but remaining stock is still being sold by Xerox and various etailers at a considerable discount. Its output quality, particularly for text, is slightly better than the M551DN. Its running costs, however, are higher than the HP's, both standard and optional paper capacity is lower, and it took twice as long as the M551DN to print out our business applications suite. If output quality is paramount, the 6280DN may be a better choice, but the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551DN offers a much better balance between quality, speed, and running costs.?

New spin on old method to develop more efficient electronics

ScienceDaily (July 1, 2012) ? With the advent of semiconductor transistors -- invented in 1947 as a replacement for bulky and inefficient vacuum tubes -- has come the consistent demand for faster, more energy-efficient technologies. To fill this need, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are proposing a new spin on an old method: a switch from the use of silicon electronics back to vacuums as a medium for electron transport -- exhibiting a significant paradigm shift in electronics.

Their findings were published online in Nature Nanotechnology July 1.

For the past 40 years, the number of transistors placed on integrated circuit boards in devices like computers and smartphones has doubled every two years, producing faster and more efficient machines. This doubling effect, commonly known as "Moore's Law," occurred by scientists' ability to continually shrink the transistor size, thus producing computer chips with all-around better performance. However, as transistor sizes have approached lower nanometer scales, it's become increasingly difficult and expensive to extend Moore's Law further.

"Physical barriers are blocking scientists from achieving more efficient electronics," said Hong Koo Kim, principal investigator on the project and Bell of Pennsylvania/Bell Atlantic Professor in the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering. "We worked toward solving that road block by investigating transistors and its predecessor -- the vacuum."

The ultimate limit of transistor speed, says Kim, is determined by the "electron transit time," or the time it takes an electron to travel from one device to the other. Electrons traveling inside a semiconductor device frequently experience collisions or scattering in the solid-state medium. Kim likens this to driving a vehicle on a bumpy road -- cars cannot speed up very much. Likewise, the electron energy needed to produce faster electronics is hindered.

"The best way to avoid this scattering -- or traffic jam -- would be to use no medium at all, like vacuum or the air in a nanometer scale space," said Kim. "Think of it as an airplane in the sky creating an unobstructed journey to its destination."

However, says Kim, conventional vacuum electronic devices require high voltage, and they aren't compatible with many applications. Therefore, his team decided to redesign the structure of the vacuum electronic device altogether. With the assistance of Siwapon Srisonphan, a Pitt PhD candidate, and Yun Suk Jung, a Pitt postdoctoral fellow in electrical and computer engineering, Kim and his team discovered that electrons trapped inside a semiconductor at the interface with an oxide or metal layer can be easily extracted out into the air. The electrons harbored at the interface form a sheet of charges, called two-dimensional electron gas. Kim found that the Coulombic repulsion -- the interaction between electrically charged particles -- in the electron layer enables the easy emission of electrons out of silicon. The team extracted electrons from the silicon structure efficiently by applying a negligible amount of voltage and then placed them in the air, allowing them to travel ballistically in a nanometer-scale channel without any collisions or scattering.

"The emission of this electron system into vacuum channels could enable a new class of low-power, high-speed transistors, and it's also compatible with current silicon electronics, complementing those electronics by adding new functions that are faster and more energy efficient due to the low voltage," said Kim.

With this finding, he says, there is the potential for the vacuum transistor concept to come back, but in a fundamentally different and improved way.
