Pet cat bug risk to humans probe

Experts say more research is needed into a disease spread by cats after figures show an estimated 350,000 people a year in the UK become infected with toxoplasmosis.

Although only a minority of people - between one and two in every 10 - has symptoms, advisers say extra measures to control the disease may be needed.

The disease is spread by direct contact with cats or eating contaminated food.

The Food Standards Agency has released an official report.

Cat owners are assured that the risks can be managed with good basic hygiene and common sense.

British Veterinary Association past president and veterinary surgeon Harvey Locke said: "The biggest threat is to pregnant women and those who are immuno-compromised, which we have known for some time. It is useful to reiterate that they should take extra care but there is no need for people to get rid of their pet cats or choose not to have cats as pets."

The report says there is a lack of data on the condition, making it difficult to estimate the real burden of the disease.

And it says the current consumer advice should be reviewed.

FSA chief scientist Andrew Wadge said: "This thorough and detailed report points out key gaps in our knowledge about this parasite and suggests areas where more research is needed which will help us in estimating how much infection is due to food and which foods might be the highest risk.

"The report also suggests we look again at our advice to vulnerable groups and ensure that it reflects current scientific knowledge."

In about 80% of cases, a person who is infected will not be aware and will have no symptoms.

Others will develop mild flu-like symptoms, but will not need treatment.

But toxoplasmosis - the disease in humans - can cause serious complications in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV and cancer.

And in pregnant women it can result in the baby being born blind or with brain damage. Three babies in every 100,000 are born with the condition in the UK.

Toxoplasmosis is a notifiable disease in Scotland but is neither a notifiable nor reportable disease in the rest of the UK.

Gloves advice

The culprit parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, can get into the food chain via cats faeces causing contamination of soil, water and plants.

Humans may catch the infection from eating undercooked meat from animals harbouring toxoplasma or from contact with cat litter or contaminated soil.

Once infected, a person is immune from further infection for life.

The best way to avoid infection is to make sure you wear gloves when gardening or changing your cat's litter tray, wash fruit and vegetables before eating and cook meat thoroughly - although it is possible to still enjoy it rare, says the Food Standards Agency.

Pregnant women should also avoid contact with sheep and newborn lambs during the lambing season because there is a small risk that an infected sheep or lamb could pass the infection on at this time.

Frederick Lee Brooke: Writing in English, Dreaming in German

I?m so pleased to welcome Frederick Lee Brooke to the blog today. Frederick is a friend, a fellow author, and a blogger and has been an immense support to me and to many others. I was fascinated by Fred?s post when he sent it through, and I hope you will be too!

?

by Frederick Lee Brooke

Frederick Lee Brooke, author of Zombie Candy When I was five years old, my mom enrolled my sister and me in a French course. She thought it would be a good skill for us in the future. There were four little kids in this class, and beyond a few childish dialogs, we mostly spent the time running around in the teacher?s yard and jumping over the hedges.

Who knows? Maybe it gave me an ear for languages, after all. Like a lot of college kids, I spent my junior year abroad, in my case Germany. Five years after graduating from college I returned to Europe, and I?ve been here ever since. I lived for one year in France, another year in southern Germany, then a couple of years in Z?rich, Switzerland. For the last 19 years I?ve lived in Basel, Switzerland.

I?ve often wondered how living over here, and being surrounded by foreign languages, might be affecting my writing.

Languages of Switzerland You may be aware that Switzerland is a country with four official languages: German (yellow area), French (violet), Italian (green), and a strange language spoken by only 60?000 people in the mountains called Rhaeto Romanisch (pink). All four languages are printed on the money. See the different variations on the 20 Swiss Franc note below. There are TV stations with programs in each of these languages. Newspapers left on the train will often be in the wrong language, because the person who left it there got on in a different part of the country.

Swiss Francs

This creates a lot of interesting and chaotic situations, not only for tourists but also for the Swiss. All Swiss people have to learn two foreign languages in school. In the German-speaking part of the country, they have to learn French, while in the French-speaking part of the country they have to learn German. With the result that many of them learn these languages badly. In the business world, when a German-Swiss does business with a French-Swiss, they therefore often settle on English so that neither one has the advantage.

My wife is Swiss, but her native language is Italian. She comes from the Italian-speaking part of the country. So she has always spoken Italian with our kids, while I always speak English with them. Their school language was mostly German. So we have the same three-ring language circus at home that exists everywhere in Switzerland.

James Joyce When I came to Europe, I was an English teacher. I taught English for a total of seven years, before becoming the manager of a language school. Many famous writers have been English teachers, including James Joyce and JK Rowling. As an English teacher, you immerse yourself in the grammar, vocabulary, and the expressions of our great language. Between the time spent preparing your lessons, teaching, and correcting homework, every moment of the day is an English language moment.

As manager of the language school, all that changed. I was responsible for selling courses to customers, most of whom were local, German-speaking people who wanted to learn English, or another language, like French. I had to speak German to them. I had to write letters and emails and offers in German. I had to deal with local suppliers, organize insurance, talk to bookkeepers and carpet cleaners and fire inspectors, all in German. As school manager 90% of my work was in German.

When you learn a language, you cross a language border. This can be very enriching, giving insight into words and their meanings, leading to ideas and images. It can also be a frustrating experience, as you are forced to accept that different languages handle communication chores in different ways. Gaps in understanding occur frequently. I have a lot of experience with gaps in understanding!

Doing Max Vinyl - Frederick Lee Brooke In my books I like to explore what happens when people misunderstand each other, using words. Husbands and wives ? people who work together. Words are a tool we use to communicate meaning, but the meanings are slippery, sometimes intentionally. Max Vinyl, the recycling king, is very adept at charming his environmentalist girlfriend, Tris, until the day she discovers he?s actually dumping computer waste in Lake Michigan. In my second book, Zombie Candy, Larry Roach is an example of a zombified cheating husband ? his brain is on auto-pilot, and it?s driving his wife, Candace, right up the wall.

Living abroad sometimes leaves me feeling out of touch with true American language, the way people really speak. You can?t get this from newspapers or TV shows. So when I am back in Chicago I am an incorrigible eavesdropper on the commuter train, at Starbucks, in line at Wal-Mart. Our books live or die on the trueness of the dialogue. Somehow it?s enough for me.

Writing in English, even as people are speaking Italian or German or some other language in the background, has never been a problem. And when I?m working on a scene that is set where I grew up near Chicago, I?m there in my mind and all my soul. It?s a way of escaping there, returning to where I come from, almost like taking a little trip back to my childhood.

Have you ever learned another language, or lived in another country? How did it affect the way you use English?

About Doing Max Vinyl

Doing Max Vinyl - Frederick Lee BrookeEarth first. Okay, maybe second. Third? She?ll KILL you!

Max Vinyl?s type of success story can only happen in America. Rising from humble beginnings, he has reached the height of the computer recycling racket. Problem is, he?s using Lake Michigan as his own personal profit center. Even that wouldn?t have been a problem if his environmentalist girlfriend Tris hadn?t found out his dirty secret. And while Max is devastated by his love crashing down around him, he?s about to learn that the rage of a woman scorned packs far more firepower and potential for destruction than he had ever imagined.

Iraq War veteran Annie Ogden has spent three tormented months living in a cabin alone trying to re-discover her purpose in life. When two of Max?s thugs threaten Annie?s sister, she is dragged into his corrupt world in an unwitting alliance with the environmentalist, Tris. Which is really lousy news for Max. Will he hold up under the coordinated attacks of two furious women? As things spin completely out of control and complications mount, it?s all Max can do to stay one step ahead until it?s all he can do to stay alive!

A farce full of hysterics and chicanery, Frederick Lee Brooke?s first installment of the Annie Ogden mysteries is an incisive examination of corporate lunacy, greed and modern disconnection. Having received multiple four and five-star reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.com, Doing Max Vinyl: An Annie Ogden Mystery is loaded with razor-sharp dialogue, ingenious plotting and so much fun it should be illegal!

About Zombie Candy

Zombie Candy - Frederick Lee Brooke You know early on, from the color of the inappropriate bra in the opening scene, that Zombie Candy is going to be a black comedy. Most people could sympathize with the male obsession for sex and zombie movies, but who would put up with a husband who doused every dish with cilantro?

Frederick Lee Brooke serves up another literary treat with this bizarre and comical tale of love and betrayal. Candace Roach enlists her best friend Annie Ogden (our favorite sleuth from Doing Max Vinyl) to find out what her husband is really up to on his weekly business trips ? but their home-cooked aversion therapy gets out of hand and hurtles along an astonishing highway of the undead.

Home from Iraq but unsure about her future, Annie Ogden isn?t your typical woman sleuth. Her best friend, Candace Roach ? gourmet cooking instructor, owner of a house in Tuscany ? isn?t your typical wronged woman either. Candace teaches gourmet cooking, and loves nothing more than orchestrating a four-course meal full of flavorful surprises and artistic touches. A selection of her recipes is found in an appendix to the book.

But with each shocking discovery in the investigation of her husband, the friendship between Candace and Annie is further put to the test. Candace ultimately takes matters into her own hands and, in an elaborate ruse, stages a nightmarish zombie drama in which her husband plays the starring role.

Weaving elements of mystery, horror and romance in a story that starts in Chicago and ends in a quaint medieval town in sun-drenched Tuscany, Zombie Candy transcends any single genre. Embark on a journey that will tickle your taste buds and wake up your funny bone. What are you waiting for?

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is in Beijing to press Chinese authorities to agree to peacefully resolve disputes with their smaller neighbors over competing territorial claims in the South China Sea. But as she began her meetings here, China questioned the stated neutrality of the United States.

Clinton met late Tuesday with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi after arriving in China from Indonesia, where she urged Southeast Asian nations to present a unified front in dealing with China in attempts to ease rising tensions in the South China Sea. Clinton will meet on Wednesday with other top Chinese officials, including President Hu Jintao and State Councillor Dai Bingguo.

The U.S. wants China and the other claimants to adopt a binding code of conduct for the region, along with a process to resolve maritime disputes without coercion, intimidation or the use of force. Clinton wants the Chinese to drop their insistence on settling conflicting claims with individual nations and instead embrace a multilateral mechanism that will give the smaller members of the Association of South East Asian Nations greater clout in negotiations.

She urged all parties to make "meaningful progress" by a November summit of East Asian leaders that President Barack Obama plans to attend in Cambodia..

In Indonesia's capital before heading to China, Clinton offered strong U.S. support for a regionally endorsed plan to ease rising tensions by implementing the code of conduct. Jakarta is the headquarters of ASEAN, and Clinton pressed the group to insist that China agree to deal with them as a bloc.

The stance puts the U.S. squarely at odds with China, which has become more aggressive in pressing its territorial claims with its smaller neighbors and wants the disputes to be resolved with each country, giving it greater leverage.

Clinton made her case in Jakarta on Tuesday in meetings with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and ASEAN secretary general Surin Pitsuwan, a day after she delivered the same message to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa. Indonesia has played a leading role in putting the six-point plan together after ASEAN was unable to reach consensus on the matter in July.

Clinton said the U.S. is "encouraged" by the plan but wants it acted on ? particularly implementation and enforcement of the code of conduct, which has languished since a preliminary framework for it was first agreed upon in 2002. .

"The United States has a national interest, as every country does, in the maintenance of peace and stability, respect for international law, freedom of navigation, unimpeded lawful commerce in the South China Sea," Clinton told reporters at a news conference with Natalegawa.

"The United States does not take a position on competing territorial claims ... but we believe the nations of the region should work collaboratively to resolve disputes without coercion, without intimidation and certainly without the use of force," she said. "That is why we encourage ASEAN and China to make meaningful progress toward finalizing a comprehensive code of conduct in order to establish rules of the road and clear procedures for peacefully addressing disagreements."

Yet China on Tuesday expressed skepticism that the U.S. is neutral in the disputes.

"The U.S. has many times said it does not take a position," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Tuesday. "I hope they will keep their promise and do more to help stability and not the opposite. The South China Sea dispute is a complicated thing. To China, the South China Sea dispute is about the sovereignty of some of the islands there. China, like other countries in the world, has the obligation to safeguard its territories."

China and a host of Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam and Brunei, have overlapping claims to several small, but potentially energy-rich areas of the South China Sea.

In July, China angered the United States, as well as Vietnam and the Philippines, by creating a city and military garrison on a remote island 220 miles from its southernmost province intended to administer hundreds of thousands of square miles of water where China wants to strengthen its control over disputed islands. China, which also has disputes with Japan in the East China Sea, rejected the criticism.

In addition to the South China Sea, Clinton will be discussing the situation in Syria as well as the efforts to deal with Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs while she is in the Chinese capital.

Clinton is in China at the midpoint of an 11-day, six-nation tour of the Asia-Pacific region that started in the Cook Islands and Indonesia. After she leaves China, she will visit East Timor and Brunei before heading to Russia's Far East to represent the United States at the annual meeting of leaders from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vladivostock.

Red Bull heir suspected in deadly hit-and-run

BANGKOK (AP) ? A grandson of the creator of the Red Bull energy drink is suspected of driving the charcoal Ferrari that struck and killed a policeman and then dragged the officer's body down a Bangkok street in an early-morning, hit-and-run accident, police said Monday.

Police took Vorayuth Yoovidhya, believed to be in his late 20s, for questioning Monday after tracing oil streaks for several blocks to his family's gated estate in a wealthy neighborhood of the Thai capital.

Bangkok's top police official, Lt. Gen. Comronwit Toopgrajank, said he took charge of the investigation after a lower-ranking policeman initially tried to cover up the crime by turning in a bogus suspect. Comronwit himself led a team of officers to search the compound of late Red Bull founder Chaleo Yoovidhaya, one of Thailand's wealthiest men before he passed away this year, and confiscated a dark gray Ferrari with a dented front bumper.

The victim, Sgt. Maj. Wichean Glanprasert, 47, was killed during a pre-dawn motorcycle patrol. Thai media reported that the car dragged the officer and his motorcycle for several dozen meters (feet) as it sped through the residential neighborhood.

Comronwit said he suspended the police officer who attempted to subvert the investigation.

"A policeman is dead. I can't let this stand. If I let this case get away, I'd rather quit," he told reporters. "I don't care how powerful they are. If I can't get the actual man in this case, I will resign."

The Yoovidhaya family was ranked the 4th richest in Thailand this year by Forbes magazine, with a net worth of $5.4 billion. Red Bull creator Chaleo Yoovidhaya died in his 80s in March, leaving his heirs a wide range of businesses, including shares in the globally popular energy drink brand, hospitals and real estate.

The family also co-owns a company that is a sole authorized importer of Ferrari cars in Thailand.

No time for a baby book? Not so, with these sites

Mixbook

An example of the kind of baby book you can easily create, this one using Mixbook.

By Jen Rabulan-Bertram, Techlicious

With my first child, I bought a traditional baby book and brought it with me to the hospital to fill out all the details. For my new guy, who?s at the sixth month mark, I haven?t even thought about a baby book until now. Such is the life of the second kid.

Fortunately, it?s easy to get caught up. Photobook sites do pretty much all the work for you, guiding you through the process of creating your photo book for the first year, with layouts that prompt you for photos and details of important milestones.

After handpicking your photos, you choose from a variety of baby-centric templates, and many photo book sites can auto-fill the book for you. Memorializing that first year couldn?t be easier ... even for the second, third and fourth child.

Kidmondo

Kidmondo

Kidmondo offers a detailed online journaling experience. Parents can keep tabs on baby's growth with helpful online features such as weight, height, medical and dental charts, and diary entries, which then are integrated into your photo book, which Kimondo calls a ?KidBook." The KidBook starts at $28 for a 20-page softcover book.

Shutterfly

Shutterfly

Shutterfly's Custom Path photo book software lets you customize just about every element on each page, including adding scrapbooking sticker-like embellishments. For someone who?s looking for a little more handholding, you can choose a baby template and then add helpful Idea Pages, which prompt you to include photos of major milestones, such as baby's first steps and first foods. There are even pages to highlight each month of the baby's first year. Prices start at $12.99 for a 5-by-7 photo book.

Mixbook

Mixbook

Mixbook is my favorite site, with its easy-to-use software, large selection of cute baby themes and selection of virtual stickers for a scrapbook-like feel. I also appreciate the ability to tap into my Instagram photo stream. Mixbook also offers fun page suggestions in its Baby?s First Year theme, where mom can explain how baby?s name was chosen, insert a copy of her baby?s birth certificate and show baby?s first bath. Prices start at $12.99 for a classic square photo book.

The clock is ticking for kids to head back into the classroom. Actress and author Soleil Moon Frye shares a few of her favorite educational gadgets and apps that will have your kids ready for a new school year.
