Ax-wielding man kills 3 kids, wounds 13 in China

An ax-wielding man burst into a day care center in China and attacked the children, killing three and wounding another 13 before police subdued him.

The incident took place Friday in China?s southern province of Guangxi.

Little else is known about the incident, which was first reported in China?s official state news agency, Xinhua. The children, aged between 6 and 12, were reportedly sitting down for lunch at a day care center in a local Pingan county residential compound when the man entered and began swinging at them with an ax.

Wounded children ? some severely ? were rushed to local area hospitals. Local police who arrived at the scene were able to disarm the man and arrest him.

Police were still investigating the motivation behind the attack.

Violent incidents against children are not rare in mainland China. In the past two years, a string of attacks at schools and day care centers involving lone attackers rattled the country, culminating with a series of three consecutive school attacks that took place over a three-day period in 2010.

In one of the incidents, Xu Yuyuan, 47, entered a Jiangsu province school in April 2010 and stabbed 29 children and three teachers. Xu told a court the next month that he wanted to ?vent his rage against society,? and that he was angry after a series of public humiliations and unsuccessful business ventures.

Determined to show that authorities were getting tough on crime against children, the court sentenced Xu to death after a half-day trial.

At the time, officials and social commentators argued that the incidents were isolated and committed by mentally unstable persons or those with extreme grievances against the government.

Many around the country, however, argued the attacks underscored both increasing societal pressures on Chinese people and an urgent need for China to overhaul how it approaches mental health evaluation and treatment.

Earlier this year, Chinese legislatures had begun discussion on much needed mental health law reforms.

Pesticides not yet proven guilty of causing honeybee declines, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? The impact of crop pesticides on honeybee colonies is unlikely to cause colony collapse, according to a paper in the journal Science September 20, 2012. More research is now needed to predict the impact of widely-used agricultural insecticides, called neonicotinoids, on honeybee populations.

UK scientists from the University of Exeter and Food and Environment Agency highlight flaws in previous research (published in Science, April 2012) that predicted that neonicotinoids could cause honeybee colony collapse. Neonicotinoids are among the most widely-used agricultural insecticides and honeybees ingest residues of the pesticides as they gather nectar and pollen from treated plants.

The previous research has been cited by scientists, environmentalists and policy-makers as evidence of the future impact of these pesticides on honeybees. It is likely that the research was instrumental in the French government's recent decision to ban the use of thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid that is the active ingredient of Cruiser OSR, a pesticide produced by the Swiss company Syngenta.

However, the new paper argues that the calculations made in the research were flawed because they failed to reflect the rate at which honeybee colonies recover from losing individuals.

The previous research, led by French scientist Mika?l Henry, showed that the death rate of bees increased when they drank nectar laced with a neonicotinoid pesticide, thiamethoxam. It calculated that this would cause their colony to collapse. The research published September 20 explains how the calculation may have used an inappropriately low birth rate.

Lead author Dr James Cresswell of the University of Exeter said: "We know that neonicotinoids affect honeybees, but there is no evidence that they could cause colony collapse. When we repeated the previous calculation with a realistic birth rate, the risk of colony collapse under pesticide exposure disappeared.

"I am definitely not saying that pesticides are harmless to honeybees, but I think everyone wants to make decisions based on sound evidence -- and our research shows that the effects of thiamethoxam are not as severe as first thought.

"We do not yet have definitive evidence of the impact of these insecticides on honeybees and we should not be making any decisions on changes to policy on their use. It is vital that more research is conducted so that we can understand the real impact of neonicotinoids on honeybees, so governments can put together a proper plan to protect them from any dangers that the chemicals pose."

Founder of StandUp for Kids faces child sex charges

Police in Colorado have arrested the founder of children's charity StandUp For Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps homeless and at-risk children.

Richard Lee Koca, Sr., 69, was arrested on Saturday in Aurora, Colo., and charged with felony sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, a charge that stems from "acts with a child he was supervising in Aurora,"?police said, according to?The Aurora Sentinel. Investigators fear there could be additional victims.

Aurora police began investigating Koca Aug. 29. He's currently being held in the Arapahoe County Jail on $250,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, The Sentinel said.

Koca founded StandUp For Kids, a national organization based in Atlanta, in 1990, and served as its CEO until 2010, reported TheDenverChannel.com. The organization's website, StandUpForKids.Org, was taken down after Koca's arrest.

Court records indicate a pattern of alleged abuse began in August 2009 and continued into 2012, TheDenverChannel.com reported. Koca faces seven felony counts of sexual assault on a single juvenile victim.

With Koca's extensive ties to children -- he was a Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America in Panama, volunteered at an English orphanage, and was involved in Explorer scout programs in California -- officials are encouraging any other possible victims to come forward.

"He placed himself in situations where there were youth around with the fa?ade that he was doing good," Aurora Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said, reported TheDenverChannel.com.

Koca served in the Navy for 30 years, working with children in various places across the U.S. and overseas during his military career as well, The Aurora Sentinel said. He has continued to serve on the board of directors of StandUp for Kids since he retired from his position as CEO.

To me, dishes like this are great for cooler weather, which is just around the corner since Fall will soon be here officially. For Michelle, this recipe was a way to beef up her protein intake in a fairly economical way. Canned beans were substituted for chicken and ground beef. They don?t offer a complete protein but can certainly keep up your stamina. Add in some dairy in the form of shredded cheese and a dollop of sour cream to help round out that protein and add in some wonderful flavor. Michelle also recommends a touch of salsa and guacamole. The recipe is simple and straightforward ? one of those ?why didn?t I think of that?? type of things. Give it a try.

There are lots of Assam gardens, some with very unique flavors. My favorite is Borengajuli Estate (my review), although Tarajulie Estate is also quite delicious (my review). Like the black bean quesadillas, these teas are especially good during cool weather, although hubby and I drink them year round. We also prefer to steep these teas up a bit stronger and add some milk and sweetener. There are those who really don?t like that idea, but 3/5ths of tea drinkers who have some form of tea with milk added, from straight Assam to bubble tea to masala chai to chai latt?s, can?t be that wrong. They?re certainly right with this simple and satisfying dish!

Point-and-shoot or fashion accessory? This is the conundrum posed by the XF1, a new retro-styled point-and-shoot from Fujifilm. It's a nice looking camera with a solid and fairly light build, certainly, and while the faux leather (in black, red or tan) might not be for everyone, the company was quick to point out that it'll go nicely with your new designer handbag, for whatever that's worth. The textured design is complimented nicely by a metal border on the top and bottom. There's a bit of a learning curve here, when it comes to just turning the thing on -- give it a twist and a pull, not unlike a childproof pill cap to put it in standby and another pull to get things started.

There's a big, bright three-inch LCD on the rear of the device. Click the E-Fn button on the bottom right, and you can actually reassign the button mapping on the back to your liking on the display. Of course, such style and functionality comes at a price -- this guy will run you $500 when it goes on sale next month.
