NKoreans salute, cry for late leader Kim Jong Il (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea's next leader escorted his father's hearse in an elaborate state funeral on a bitter, snowy day Wednesday, bowing and saluting in front of tens of thousands of citizens who wailed and stamped their feet in grief for Kim Jong Il.

Son and successor Kim Jong Un was head mourner on the gray day in Pyongyang, walking with one hand on the black hearse that carried his father's coffin on its roof, his other hand raised in salute, his head bowed against the wind.

At the end of the 2 1/2-hour procession, rifles fired 21 times as Kim Jong Un stood flanked by the top party and military officials who are expected to be his inner circle of advisers. Kim then saluted again as goose-stepping soldiers carrying flags and rifles marched by.

Although analysts say Kim Jong Un is on the path toward cementing his power and all moves in North Korea so far ? from titles giving him power over the ruling party and military and his leading position in the funeral procession ? point in that direction, his age and inexperience leave questions about Kim's long-term prospects. Whereas his father was groomed for power for 20 years before taking over, the younger Kim has had only about two years.

He also faces the huge challenges of running a country that struggles to feed its people even as it pursues a nuclear weapons program that has earned it international sanctions and condemnation.

Kim Jong Il ? who led with absolute power after his father Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, through a famine that killed hundreds of thousands and the pursuit of nuclear and missile programs ? died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69.

Mourners in parkas lined the streets of Pyongyang, waving, stamping and crying as the convoy bearing his coffin passed. Some struggled to get past security personnel holding back the crowd.

"How can the sky not cry?" a weeping soldier standing in the snow said to state TV. "The people ... are all crying tears of blood."

The dramatic scenes of grief showed how effectively North Korea built a personality cult around Kim Jong Il despite chronic food shortages and decades of economic hardship.

A large challenge for North Korea's propaganda apparatus will be "to counter the public's perception that the new leader is a spoiled child of privilege," said Brian Myers, an expert on North Korean propaganda at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea.

"Having Kim Jong Un trudge mournfully next to the hearse in terrible weather was a very clever move," Myers said.

Even as North Koreans mourned the loss of the second leader the nation has known, the transition of power to Kim Jong Un was well under way. The young man, who is in his late 20s, is already being hailed by state media as the "supreme leader" of the party, state and army.

Kim wore a long, dark overcoat as he strode alongside his father's hearse accompanied by top party officials behind him and key military leaders on the other side of the limousine ? a lineup that was a good look at who will be the core leadership in North Korea.

North Korea now turns to Thursday's memorial ceremony. Although there will be tributes to Kim Jong Il, the country will be turning toward Kim Jong Un, analysts said.

"The message will be clear: Kim Jong Un now leads the country and there is no alternative," said Kim Yeon-su, a North Korea expert at the state-run Korea National Defense University in South Korea.

There will also be more attention paid to the inner circle forming around Kim Jong Un.

On Wednesday, he was accompanied by Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, who is expected to be crucial in helping Kim Jong Un take power.

Also escorting the limousine were military chief Ri Yong Ho and People's Armed Forces Minster Kim Yong Chun. Their presence indicates they will be important players as the younger Kim consolidates his leadership. Top Workers' Party officials Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam and senior military officer Kim Jong Gak also took prominent positions.

The early part of Wednesday's funeral ceremony was shrouded in secrecy, as in 1994, when Kim Il Sung died. Back then, Kim Jong Il and top officials held a private, hourlong ceremony inside the Kumsusan palace before the procession through the city, according to his official biography.

Pyongyang's foreign diplomats were invited to attend the procession, though few other outsiders appeared to be allowed into the country for the funeral. One foreign diplomat in Pyongyang, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of her work, said funereal music played and people wept as the convoy left Kumsusan followed by a large number of vehicles and army jeeps.

After showing taped footage of mourners and documentaries of Kim Jong Il, state TV began airing the procession, showing cars moving slowly through the snowy city, led by a limousine carrying a huge portrait of a smiling Kim Jong Il.

Wednesday's procession had a stronger military presence than 1994.

Kim Jong Il, who ushered in a "military first" era when he took power, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son to the world.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party last year.

After the funeral, the young Kim is expected to solidify his power by formally assuming command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and becoming general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.

Kim Jong Il's two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, were not spotted at the procession.

Orfevre reigns as Japan's new superstar in Arima Kinen

Japanese Triple Crown hero Orfevre mowed down a world-class field of older horses in Sunday's Grade 1 Arima Kinen, stamping his passport for the world stage in 2012. In a symbolic passing of the torch, reigning Horse of the Year Buena Vista could do no better than seventh in her career finale, and was regaled at a poignant retirement ceremony following the Christmas racing at Nakayama.

Orfevre was making his first start against his elders in the season-ending "Grand Prix," but had no difficulty in racking up his sixth straight victory. In the process, he handed trainer Yasutoshi Ikee a JRA record-equaling fifth Grade 1 win in a single season.

While the Sunday Racing Co. colorbearer was responsible for four of them -- his Triple Crown sweep along with the Arima Kinen -- his stablemate Tosen Jordan also contributed through his score in the Grade 1 Tenno Sho Autumn on October 30.

Orfevre's victory was historic in other ways as well. He is a full brother to 2009 Arima Kinen winner Dream Journey, also trained by Ikee. Both were sired by Stay Gold from the winning Mejiro McQueen mare Oriental Art, who now ranks as the only mare to produce two different winners of the Arima Kinen.

Moreover, Orfevre became the third Japanese Triple Crown winner to capture the Arima Kinen in the same year. The first to record such a grand slam was Symboli Rudolf (1984), the recently-deceased Japanese legend. In the interim, only Narita Brian (1994) was able to follow in his hoofsteps. Even Deep Impact failed in his quest in 2005.

Orfevre, dispatched as the 6-5 favorite, wasn't helped by the way the Arima Kinen unfolded. Loping along near the rear after the start, the chestnut lagged farther behind than regular rider Kenichi Ikezoe would have preferred. But the in-form jockey didn't panic, or rush the colt, and let him settle where he was comfortable.

Up front, Earnestly was waltzing through slow fractions. Defending champion Victoire Pisa stalked in second, and Buena Vista was uncharacteristically close in a rail-skimming third. She raced in tandem with Tosen Jordan, so the respective top two from the Grade 1 Japan Cup looked ready to engage in another battle. As it turned out, neither could raise their game when the race started in earnest entering the homestretch.

Earnestly and Victoire Pisa tussled at the top of the lane, but despite their early crawl, they had surprisingly little left to withstand the closers. Eishin Flash, who had been well placed just off the pace, was the first to join them. Wider out, however, erupted Orfevre.

Having circled the bulk of the field on the final turn, Orfevre continued his momentum into the stretch and rolled past Eishin Flash. His winning margin was just three-quarters of a length, but his manner of victory was decisive. The final time was a pedestrian 2:36 for the about 1 9/16 miles on firm turf, reflecting the lack of any sensible pace. Orfevre's tr

Scene of Ind. girl's death is sex offender haven

    Allen Count, Ind., Sheriff's Office

Michael Len Plumadore was held without bond after his arrest Monday night in the death of Aliahna Lemmon, 9.

    By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Updated at 7:57 p.m. ET: Michael Len Plumadore, the man accused of killing and dismembering 9-year-old Aliahna Lemmon at his home in Fort Wayne, Ind., has been on the run for 11 years for battery of a Florida law enforcement officer.

Florida Department of Correction records show that Plumadore, now 39, fled the state after he was sentenced to a year in prison in May 2000. Details of the incident in Miami Beach weren't immediately available.

Updated at 6:45 p.m. ET: The Associated Press, quoting one of the 15 sex offenders living at Northway Woods, reported that Aliahna Lemmon's mother had recently moved to the trailer park to take care of her father, James E. Lemmon, a convicted sex offender who had emphysema.

James Lemmon died Dec. 3 at age 66, Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home of Hamilton said. State prison records show that he was convicted March 6, 2006, of child molestation.

The official cause of Aliahna's death was pending completion of an autopsy Wednesday, but a preliminary coroner's report concluded that "the manner of death was homicide."

Original post: The Indiana trailer park that was home to 9-year-old Aliahna Lemmon ? whose dismembered body was found this week ? is also home to an extraordinary number of registered sex offenders, police and court records show.

An affidavit filed Tuesday by Allen County sheriff's investigators said Michael Len Plumadore, 39, of the Northway Woods trailer park in Fort Wayne, confessed to having killed and dismembered Aliahna on Friday. Her head, hands and feet were found in a freezer in Plumadore's home; the rest of her body was scattered elsewhere in the area.

Plumadore was held without bail Tuesday pending formal charges.

Plumadore lives in the same trailer park as Aliahna ? who a relative said was partly blind and deaf ? and her two younger sisters, and he often baby-sat for them. The girls had been staying with Plumadore for about a week because their mother was ill.

The affidavit doesn't say why Plumadore would have wanted to kill Aliahna. He isn't on the county's sex offender registry ? court records show only convictions for trespassing, assault and auto theft in Florida and North Carolina.

Northway Woods is one of an increasing number of isolated locations around the country that have become havens for registered sex offenders, who in most states must not live within a certain distance of places where children congregate, such as schools and churches.

The Allen County sheriff's registry shows that 15 sex offenders live at Northway Woods, a small mobile home park with 54 lots, only about 25 of which are occupied. Among them are men with multiple felony convictions for sexual abuse of a minor and child molestation.

In other words, three-fifths of the occupied units house a registered sex offender. That's an extraordinary concentration in Indiana, which has only 137 registered sex offenders per 100,000 population ? the third-lowest ratio among all 50 states, according to data compiled by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Sex offender registry map from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children(.pdf)

Seven other registered offenders live within 2 miles of the trailer park, the registry shows ? meaning nearly 5 percent of all of the county's 537 registered sex offenders live within a short walk of one another.

"You see it on TV all the time in other states, in other places, but this is in our own backyard," said Kathleen McKee, who lives in the Northway Woods park. "It's in our own home, and it's scary."

"I feel for the family, because I have three children myself ? two daughters and a son," McKee told NBC station WISE of Fort Wayne. "I can't imagine what that family is feeling, especially around Christmas time."

Before he was arrested, Plumadore gave a brief interview Monday morning to WISE. The station hasn't aired the interview, but it reported that Plumadore said he was going in to take a polygraph test and that he, too, was eager to find Aliahna.

WISE constructed and aired this timeline of the hours leading up to Plumadore's arrest:

NY Times to sell regional newspapers for $143 million (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The New York Times Co said it will sell 16 regional newspapers spread across the U.S. Southeast and California to Halifax Media Holdings for $143 million in cash as it looks to cut costs and focus on its most important papers and their websites.

Regional newspapers have struggled recently because of weak local retail and national advertising, partly reflecting the economy's broader travails.

The company said it will record an after-tax gain on the sale -- expected to close in a few weeks -- in the first quarter of 2012. It estimates the net after-tax proceeds from the sale to be about $150 million.

"I think that it's toward the low end of what we expected. I was expecting $150-$200 million," Evercore Partners analyst Douglas Arthur told Reuters.

"What it implies is that margins on regional newspapers were not as high as we thought, but the underlying profitability of the main New York Times is higher."

The analyst, however, said pension obligation will stay with the company and that could be one of the uses of the proceeds.

The group to be hived off has a weekday circulation of about 430,000, with newspapers such as Sarasota Herald-Tribune, The Ledger, in Florida; Herald-Journal in South Carolina; and The Press Democrat in California in its stable.

Last week, the Times Co said it will sell its regional newspapers days after Chief Executive Janet Robinson announced her sudden retirement.

The group's revenue -- more than a tenth of Times Co's overall sales -- fell about 7 percent to $190 million in the first nine months of this year.

"These newspapers have been a drag on overall results due to heavier reliance on local advertising which lags national advertising growth," Morningstar's Joscelyn Mackay said.

"Without these papers, the firm will be able to focus on its flagship The New York Times and monetize its digital content."

Halifax Media owns The Daytona-Beach News Journal, among other papers and media businesses across the south.

Times Co shares, which have lost a fifth of their value this year, closed at $7.76 on Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Bolivia-Peru Railway: Evo Morales Hopes To Build New Link

LIMA, Peru -- Bolivia's president said Monday that he hopes to build a new railway linking his country to Peru that would facilitate exports to Asia.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said he has discussed the plan with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala. Morales told the Peruvian radio station RPP that the railway would run from Puerto Suarez, on Bolivia's border with Brazil, to the Pacific port of Ilo in Peru.

"It's my great dream," Morales said, adding that Brazil and Peru would also gain from having a railway link. He said it would carry agricultural products as well as other commodities to Asian countries.

Morales said in August after a visit to China that Chinese officials expressed interest in making the railway project a priority. It's not immediately clear how much the railway would cost, or how much financial support China might provide.

Bolivia and Peru currently export minerals to China including zinc and lead. Bolivia currently uses roads to truck shipments to Pacific ports in Chile.

Morales made the remarks Monday in the Peruvian city of Cusco, where he spent Christmas after meeting with Peru's president.

Humala also reiterated his support last week for Bolivia in its long-standing request that Chile provide the landlocked country with a corridor of land to access the Pacific coast.

Soldier back from Afghanistan shot at homecoming party in California

Christopher Sullivan survived a suicide bombing in Afghanistan, only to be shot at his homecoming party in southern California.

Family members said the returning soldier, 22, was left paralyzed after the shooting on Friday.

Sullivan's friends threw a party to celebrate his return on leave to his hometown of San Bernardino.

But the party turned tragic when a fight broke out between Sullivan's brother and one of people who showed up to the party. When Sullivan tried to break up the fight, the man pulled out a gun and fired into Sullivan's back, shattering his spine, according to the San Bernardino Sun.

"My son didn't deserve this this. He served his country," the soldier's mother Suzanne Sullivan told the San Bernardino Sun.

Sullivan cracked his collar bone and suffered brain damage after a suicide bombing last December in the Afghan city of Kandahar. The attack killed five of his fellow soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division, the San Bernardino Sun reports.

Sullivan earned a Purple Heart for his service.

"To come home to this, it's so unfair," Sullivan's aunt Theresa Marquez told the San Bernardino Sun.

"He was so happy to be back," his sister Crystal Watson said. "He kept saying, everything was going to be OK."

Sullivan planned to go to college when he completed his Army enlistment in April.

The gunman fled the scene before police arrived. They have not identified the suspect.

At least 61 dead in northeast Nigeria violence (AP)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? At least 61 people have been killed during several days of fighting in northeast Nigeria between security forces and a radical Muslim sect responsible for a series of increasingly bloody attacks in Africa's most populous nation, authorities said Saturday.

The fighting between suspected members of the sect known as Boko Haram and a joint task force of police and military began Thursday in Borno and Yobe states in Nigeria's arid northeast corner bordering Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The fighting left residents cowering in their homes amid gunfire and explosions.

At least 50 people have died in Damaturu and Potiskum in Yobe state during the fighting, local police commissioner Lawan Tanko told The Associated Press on Saturday. In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a mortuary official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter told the AP at least 11 bodies had been brought in from the fighting.

The violence left at least two senior police officers dead in Yobe state, while a military spokesman in Borno said that three churches had been bombed during attacks there.

In Yobe state, the fighting became so intense that the military ordered those living in a neighborhood surrounding Damaturu's central mosque to evacuate. After a deadline, soldiers riding in armored personnel carriers and tanks drove into the neighborhood shooting, Tanko said.

"We were able to kill 12 of the Boko Haram armed sect and bombers," Tanko said. The police commissioner said officers also recovered Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and explosives.

Boko Haram has launched a series of bombings against Nigeria's weak central government over the last year in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across the nation of more than 160 million people home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

Little is known about the sources of Boko Haram's support, though its members recently began carrying out a wave of bank robberies in the north. Police stations also have been bombed and officers killed.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say.

The sect is responsible for more than 450 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

4 out of 5 Australians Worry about Debt; New Reality - Owing More on Your Home Than You Own; Shocking Year for Corporate Collapses ; Merry Christmas to Those Down Under (935061)

Merry Christmas to all my Australian readers. Here is an economic roundup, with many links sent from Australian readers over the past couple weeks, especially Tony the "Brisbane Bear".

    Boxing Day Sale Before Christmas

Boxing Day is traditionally the day after Christmas. Not this year, at least for all retailers.

Tony Writes ... "Talk about desperation! We are now having the traditional Boxing day sales before Christmas. This will not make any difference in the longer run as everyone is now so accustomed to deals that any retailer who doesn't offer substantial discounts won't get any business. It is a whole new paradigm in retail that will eventually spread to all sectors. Businesses with high fixed costs will go broke in droves."

Please consider Myer brings forward online 'Boxing Day' sale

    December 23, 2011
The annual Boxing Day sales need a new name, it seems.

This year retail giant Myer will launch its annual post-Christmas shopping bonanza two days early, on Christmas Eve, for online customers.

Myer spokesman Steven Carey said more than 1100 new items would be available for purchase on the Myer website from 6pm tomorrow - the first time the company had launched its stocktake sale early online.

While some customers were expected to stick to the annual tradition of queueing outside stores on Monday to snap up a bargain, Mr Carey said more and more people were choosing to shop from the comfort of their own home.

??We?ve got to cater to both the online and the bricks-and-mortar customer,?? Mr Carey said.

It comes as electronics giant Harvey Norman, which has long complained about the rise of international online shopping, began selling computer games this week via a website in Ireland that lets Australian consumers avoid GST.

Chairman Gerry Harvey said the company had launched the initiative reluctantly. "We are not doing this with a great deal of joy. We have been able to do this for a long time, we have held off," he said. "But you get to a point where you can?t hold off."

Mr Carey said if Myer?s online experiment this year was successful, it could become an annual event.

Treasurer Swan takes a potshot at 'whinger' Retailer Gerry Harvey

Tony writes ..."The Treasurer and our biggest retailer are having a slanging match right on Christmas. The party is over and everyone is getting very, very agitated as they try to deal with the new reality."

Please consider Swan takes a potshot at 'whinger' Gerry Harvey

    December 23, 2011
Treasurer Wayne Swan says it's just not Christmas if retailer Gerry Harvey isn't whingeing about soft sales.

The co-founder of Harvey Norman has been highly critical of the rise of international online shopping, which he says is threatening Australian jobs and businesses.

Mr Swan defended the GST threshold on goods bought offshore, saying a Productivity Commission report into the issue found it wasn't the cause of retailers' woes.

"I can't remember a Christmas where Gerry Harvey wasn't whingeing," he told ABC Radio today.

"Back when we put the original stimulus package in place he spent a lot of time whingeing about that, but ultimately it did lift consumption in Australia."

Mr Harvey responded, saying he wasn't a whinger and just wanted to protect the whole retail sector, not only his business.

"To call me a whinger when you are poll-driven, that's just an illusion," he told ABC Radio.

He told Mr Swan: "I've been telling you and your government for a long time ... you have a major problem: the GST. You thought it was more important to think about the votes you were going to get."

Retailers Rocked as Debt Crisis Spreads

Tony writes ... "Hi Mish. I have been saying for ages that we have cost structures set to boom time conditions with no way of lowering costs.

Panic is setting in. Prominent broker Charlie Aitken has warned that the industry has a cost base tailored for a boom year such as 2007, when volumes are more in line with 2002."

Please consider Retailers rocked as debt crisis spreads

THE nation's shoppers have firmly closed their wallets amid fears of a full-blown debt contagion in Europe, while Billabong shares were smashed by 44 per cent yesterday after the iconic surfwear company released a shock profit downgrade.

The Billabong malaise extended to other discretionary retail stocks such as David Jones and JB Hi-Fi, as more than $30 billion was shed from the value of local equities.

4 out of 5 Australians Worry about Debt

The Sydney Morning Herald reports Most Australians worried about debt

    December 19, 2011
Four out of five Australians are worried about their ability to meet future debt repayments, a survey shows.

The biannual survey by data intelligence company Veda, found 82 per cent were worried about their ability to meet debt repayments in the future, up from 75 per cent a year ago.

The survey also found that one in five Australians was struggling to repay their current credit commitments.

However, about 29 per cent of this sub group were considering applying for more credit in the next six months, the survey found.

"It is concerning that there are people struggling with their current debt levels but are turning to more credit as the answer, potentially edging closer to a debt spiral," Veda senior adviser Matthew Strassbourg said in a statement.

Here is a stat straight from the Twilight Zone: 82% are concerned about debt yet 29% of those worried want more credit.

New Reality - Owing More Than You Own

The Age reports on the "New Reality" Owing More on Your Home Than You Own

Rising property values have been an article of faith in the housing market for a generation of Australians who borrowed big as real estate prices marched ever upward.

While the percentage of home owners with so-called negative equity remains tiny - about one in fifty of the 3 million households with mortgages - the number may well swell in 2012 if home prices extend their declines as some analysts expect.

The emergence of a sector of the housing market ??under water?? on their mortgages may hurt an already fragile real estate market. Any forced sales would obviously dent individual household wealth but further drops in home prices would deter investors from buying residential properties.

Tony writes "Hey Mish, Negative equity is a new buzz word slowly entering the lexicon."

Yes indeed. For starters, I highly doubt that only 1-in-50 are underwater. Regardless, I expect that number to be 40-in-50 of those who bought or did a substantial cash-out refi in the last four years. I do not know what percentage that is, but I do known it is far more than 2%.

    Shocking Year for Corporate Collapses

Tony comments "Hey Mish, panic is setting in as retail chains go broke daily. The banks are warning that next year will be very tough. It is a vicious cycle and it is gathering speed as panic spreads and people stop spending"

SmartCompany reports Tools chain Glenfords placed in voluntary administration

The shocking year for Australian corporate collapses has continued, with discount tools chain Glenfords now up for sale after being placed in voluntary administration last week.

The sale of the chain comes as the do-it-yourself sector has reached a major transformation point, with market leading hardware chain Bunnings now battling the Woolworths-backed Masters chain.

Analysts have said mid-tier and smaller operators will slowly be pushed out of the market as Bunnings and Masters stores dominate areas once controlled by SMEs.

The construction industry has been one of the worst hit this year ? it suffers the highest number of insolvency appointments out of any sector. Glenfords has likely suffered alongside that drop in demand.

Talent Two and Billabong Shares Smashed

Tony writes ... "The interesting downgrade was Talent2, these guys have been very successful for a long time but it seems white collar jobs are drying up fast"

The Australian reports No 'ho ho' from Billabong, Talent Two

    December 19, 2011
THERE'S no ho ho ho on the bourse today, as hopes for a consumer-led recovery evaporate as quickly as snow on an outback nativity set.

Talent Two and Billabong -- smashed by 50 per cent and 37 per cent respectively -- tell two parts of the dismal story.

Talent Two, a leading recruiter, reported current-half earnings wouldn't come within cooee of expectations because of reduced hiring caused by ?fears of European contagion and the volatility of financial markets?.

Talent Two's full-year EBITDA is expected to come in at less than half the expected $30m or so, but the shares probably received an extra dollop of punishment because the ?market update? was issued at beer-o-clock on Friday.

Talent Two focuses on white-collar hiring, especially in the financial services sector where fearful workers rue their lack of skill at driving mining earthmovers or sealing S bends with O rings. It doesn't take a (still employed) rocket scientist to work out scared workers won't be buying electronic gizmos or surfwear, hence JB Hi-Fi's surprise downgrade last week (also after market close) and the ever-erratic Billabong's shocker this morning.

    Retail Malaise Spreads Like Wildfire

The Age Reports Myer to close or shrink stores as retail malaise bites

Last week, failed apparel retailer Fletcher Jones said it would close a third of its stores immediately and shed 61 staff as administrators try to revive and sell the company.

Myer stores at Tuggeranong in the Australian Capital Territory and at Forest Hill in Melbourne's east will close early next year. Others outlets will be shrunk when the shopping centres in which they operate are redeveloped.

Real estate stockbroking analysts suggested the Myer stores at Dandenong Plaza and possibly in Wollongong, south of Sydney, could also be closed.

It is not just the stores that are shrinking. Myer has already reduced the range of white goods, electrical items, DVDs and CDs it offers, and is also reducing the number and range of location devices such as GPSs in response to changed sales conditions.

Harvey Norman is following suit, shrinking the space devoted to electrical goods in response to a plummet in prices, which means the retailer has to sell many more television sets, for example, to make the same money.

    Tony writes ...
    Hey Mish.

Myer is probably our oldest and most respected retail department store. (I would guess Sears or Bloomingdale's would be US equivalents) they are in real trouble and are proposing closing stores and downsizing others.

Retail business models are broken (as are 1000's of other business models in various sectors) and reality is sinking in. It will be very ugly when people realise that there is literally no way out.

Wages are way, way too high and working conditions are way too generous and most all other overheads are way too costly. Throw in terrible industrial relations laws that this Socialist government has introduced and you have a recipe for disaster.

    Spotlight on Australia

For those who think Australia can do no wrong and the Australia is the place to be, need to take another look at Australian housing, Australian retail, and also the slowdown in China.

I contend things are going to get very nasty for those down under.?

Thanks for the Links - Merry Christmas

I get links from "Brisbane Bear" nearly every day and links from Bran in Spain nearly every day.

Indeed, I get links from all over the world every day and I appreciate them. Sometimes they stack up like this before I use them and sometimes I never use them. But I do appreciate them regardless.

Many times I get 30 or more emails on a story gone viral. I Typically do not respond to such articles or use them.

If you do send a link, my most common response is simply "thanks". I get hundreds of emails a day and often cannot say much more than that.

If I never respond (not once, but repetitively), I cannot use the stories you send, you are consistently late, or I have already seen them. Most often I will not use or respond to conspiracy theories.

Finally, to those who email every day, please note I may say "thanks" only occasionally.

Merry Christmas Australia (they are a nearly day ahead of Chicago), and to everyone else too!

Reggie Fil-Aime Of Nintendo Talks Facebook Gaming And Free-to ...

Social games aren't video games, in a sense. They don't really offer that experience. Reggie is correct in saying they don't really evolve. What's going to keep me playing a social game? Nothing. They're cool for a day, then you play for another day because your friends are, and then they quit, and you move on. Doing the same thing repeatedly for very little payoff isn't fun. Having to pay money, or wait hours, to progress, also isn't fun. When I can sit down, sink hours into a social game, and actually feel like coming back the next day, I'll know they're on the right track.

The only games I've really put time into, are the ones that are building off older games. Tetris is fun. Words with Friends was all right. Bejeweled is entertaining. I have yet to find an original facebook game that can really hold my attention. Knights of the Crystal or whatever it is, was fun for awhile, but it's so fundamentally flawed that I had trouble going back to it, and only did so because a friend of mine played.

F2P falls into the same hole. The game isn't free. Developers don't make money on free. Their primary goal is to shoe-horn as many possible ways for you spend money on this free game as possible. Then they worry about how fun, or how playable the title is. That just doesn't fly. Some of these games might kill some time, but they'll never hold a candle to their P2P brothers.

On a side note, Guild Wars 2 doesn't look good. Okay, it looks decent, but it's F2P (pay to own) and it shows. I saw a trailer and it was clearly lower quality than other games releasing in it's time frame. And yet, for a F2P title, it looked decent. I feel like there shouldn't be that distinction. Give me something I can enjoy, without having to constantly remind myself it's 'free'.

Note Describes Steve Jobs As Secretive 'Joker' Who 'Sounds Flakey'

This entry needs translation. To help us and submit a translation please click here

Bloomberg has published a note written by Mike Rose in June 1976 that describes Steve Jobs as a secretive 'joker' who 'sounds flakey'.

At the time Steve Jobs was looking for someone to print the manual for the Apple I. Jobs' friend Regis McKenna, head of Silicon Valley's premier advertising and public relations firm, suggested he contact Mike Rose who ran an advertising agency in Los Altos.

After Rose spoke with Jobs on the phone he left a note for his business partner, warning him that Jobs would likely be in touch.

    Here's what it said:

    Bob -
This joker (attached) is going to be calling you. Somebody at Regis McKenna reco - mended us (you). They are 2 guys - They build kits - operate out of a garage - want 10m [?] catalog sheets. Wants it for nothing. Wouldn't trust me. Told him we'd like to see what they've got - we'd estimate - Then decide.

    Sounds flakey. Watch it!

    Mike

Jobs' ended up rejected Rose's bid for being too high and had a typesetter produce the Apple I manual. The note was donated to the Silicon Valley Archives at Stanford in 1998.

APNewsBreak: Woman faces terrorism-related charge (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A California woman was indicted Wednesday on charges accusing her of sending money to Pakistan to help fund terrorist attacks against U.S. military personnel, authorities said.

Oytun Ayse Mihalik, 39, of La Palma, faces three counts of providing material support to terrorists and one count of making a false statement. If convicted of all counts, Mihalik could face up to 53 years in prison.

Mihalik funneled about $2,000 to a person in Pakistan over a three-week period beginning late last year, knowing the money would be used to prepare for and carry out attacks against the U.S. military and others overseas, federal prosecutors said.

Mihalik, who worked as a pharmacist, has been in federal custody since she was arrested in August after she attempted to board a flight to Turkey, her native country.

She previously pleaded not guilty to the false statement charge.

Mihalik lied to federal agents during an interview at Los Angeles International Airport following a six-month trip to Turkey by telling them she never used an alias to wire money overseas and she had only sent funds once, authorities said.

She told investigators the money was meant for a family friend who was having financial problems, according to an affidavit. Authorities wouldn't elaborate about how they know the money Mihalik wired overseas was going to be used for terrorist attacks.

However, court documents reveal Mihalik's arrest is "related to national security investigations in other areas of the United States." As of August, Mihalik had been cooperating with investigators, records show.

"The charges are based on the defendant's intent to cause harm to U.S. military personnel," said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles. "We have not alleged any attacks that may have resulted from the funding because the legal issue is the defendant's intent as to what the money would be used for."

Defense attorney Alan Eisner said no new evidence has been offered up by prosecutors since his client's arrest four months ago, and the money sent overseas was donated to charity.

"The evidence will show she's not funding a terrorist organization," Eisner said.

A trial on the false statement charge was set for February. Mihalik will be arraigned on the new charges at a later date.

Fluffy the crocodile survives being hit by bus (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? A young crocodile named Fluffy is back to her cranky old self after being hit by a bus while duck hunting in a city in northern Australia, a veterinarian said on Thursday.

The 4-foot, 3-inch (1.3-meter) saltwater crocodile underwent emergency surgery and then spent 11 days recovering in the Marlin Coast Veterinary Hospital after the late night accident in a beachside suburb of Cairns, Doug English said.

"It was pretty dopey for a couple of days and then it got fairly cranky so obviously it was feeling a lot better," English said.

While young crocodiles were often killed by cars on Cairns' roads, Fluffy ? so named by vet nurses because she was found with a "fluffy duck" in her jaws ? was the first English said he knew of to survive such an accident.

He praised the bravery of sugar cane farmer Andrew Herrington in bringing the injured reptile in.

"Crocs go off like a steel trap ? bang! ? in a split second," English said of their powerful jaws. "That's how they can catch a duck in the air."

Herrington said he was driving home after midnight on Dec. 10 when he came upon a bus driver trying to coax the injured crocodile off the road with a stick.

The crocodile had caught a duck and was headed across the road with it toward a creek when it was hit.

Herrington said he distracted the croc with a flashlight in the eyes before throwing a pair of overalls over her head.

He then used electrical tape to secure her jaws shut before bundling her into his SUV and taking her to the veterinary hospital where English immediately performed surgery.

"She was quite agitated, but I didn't think there was any great risk of personal harm," Herrington said.

"My main concern was for saving the little thing," he said.

"She'd bagged herself a beautiful little Pacific Black (duck) and was heading back down the creek for dinner and didn't quite get to eat it, the poor thing," he added.

Fluffy was transferred Wednesday to the Cairns Tropical Zoo, where she will continue to recuperate before she is returned to the wild.

Crocodiles have become plentiful across Australia's tropical north since they became protected by federal law in 1971.

Saltwater crocodiles can grow to up to 23 feet (7 meters) long and are the world's largest reptile.

Kim Jong Il's Life: 'Team America' Parody, Myth and Mayhem (Time.com)

In the West he was mocked for his bouffant, his pudgy belly and his platform shoes. Former U.S. President George W. Bush called him a pygmy. He was even parodied in the parody movie Team America: World Police as a dictator who walked around an empty palace singing about his loneliness.

But the ridicule could not conceal the fact that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who died at age 69 on Dec. 17, was able to maneuver his small, totalitarian nation into a force that compelled deep concern and even fear among the world's powers. He did so at a great cost to his people, including millions who died in famines in the 1990s and hundreds of thousands who are enslaved in prison camps. But in North Korea, he was called the Dear Leader and, more recently, the Supreme Leader. He sits at the pinnacle of state-enforced adulation in North Korea, below only his father, Kim Il Sung, alongside whom he will be buried in Kumsusan Memorial Palace on Dec. 29. (See pictures of the life of the Dear Leader.)

Official North Korean reports say that he died of "fatigue" while on a train ride. Kim, who reportedly feared flying and traveled by personal armored train, had suffered a stroke in 2008. He was reported in better health in recent months, having cut down on his appetite for cognac and cigars.

Like much of his life, Kim's birth was shrouded in mystery. According to North Korean state propaganda, Kim's birth on the sacred Mount Paektu in 1942 was accompanied by auspicious symbols including a new star in the sky, a double rainbow and a swallow. In truth, he was born in an anti-Japanese rebel camp in Siberia. After World War II, his father became the leader of Soviet-administered North Korea, which he led during its three-year war with U.S.-aligned South Korea. That war killed an estimate 4 million, and the standoff between the two sides continues today along the demilitarized zone, the most highly fortified border in the world, a legacy of a conflict that ended in a bitter truce in 1953. (See pictures of the rise of Kim Jong Il.)

Unlike the current transition, which was only started following Kim's 2008 stroke, he was well groomed to take power when his father died in 1994. As "the General," one of the many names he was called by in North Korea, Kim led his country on an erratic course. He promoted attacks on South Korea, including the 1987 downing of a Korean Air flight and a 1983 attack on South Korean officials in Burma.

In the 1990s, the combination of floods and severe mismanagement caused a severe series of famines that killed as many as 2 million people and sent thousands fleeing to China. Kim toyed with economic reforms and made several visits to China to see how opening up had led to rapid growth in his country's massive neighbor and ally. But his instinct was to clamp down on any significant development of private markets, which could compete with the power of the state. Instead, Kim relied on the ideologies of juche, or national self-reliance, and songun, or primacy of the military. (See "The Death of Kim Jong Il: A Nightmare Before Christmas.")

Kim had a quirky personality, the epitome of a dictator who did what he wanted because no one could tell him no. He once had a huge appetite for sushi and red wine, rich tastes made more prodigal by the neediness of so many of his countrymen. He was a movie buff with a collection of thousands of films. He ordered the kidnapping of a South Korean director and his wife in 1978. The couple was forced to help develop the North's film industry until they escaped while on a trip abroad.

State propaganda painted a dramatic picture of Kim's feats: he directed films, wrote several books, promoted a scientific revolution and on his first round of golf shot 11 holes in one. KCNA, the North Korean state-run news agency, wrote in a statement announcing his death that "he valued and loved the people very much and always shared weal and woe with them."

As leader, Kim continued North Korea's long quest for nuclear weapons, and in 2006 the country tested a small nuclear device, followed by another in 2009. Those tests further complicated the on-again, off-again denuclearization talks hosted by China, which is still pushing for a resumption of discussions. With Kim's death and the expected handover of power to his third son, Kim Jong Un, the likelihood of an agreement seems even more remote. Kim Jong Il's talent for flummoxing the international community in those talks was a sign of his most distinguishing trait: the ability to play a weak position to the fullest.

See "Kim Jong Il's Doctored Photos: Were They Hiding Ill Health?"

See pictures of North Korea's heir apparent, Kim Jong Un.

NFL expected to discuss helmet hits (AP)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? The NFL is expected to look at expanding the ban on launching and helmet hits.

Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the league's competition committee, believes it will be a topic for his group during the offseason, and changes could be presented to the owners next spring.

"I think the launch will be discussed more and more and eventually we will see helmet hits modified in the open field," McKay said.

The competition committee recommends rules changes to the owners, who then vote on them at the annual March meetings. McKay's committee was influential in getting outlawed the technique of launching ? when a player leaves his feet and leads with his head ? against defenseless players.

McKay says the idea of potentially banning launching altogether was discussed last year.

"Coaches felt there were too many circumstances where players could be perceived as doing it and were not really," he said. "It is a big step, not something I expect membership gets comfortable with over a year's time."

Flagrant helmet hits have been a high-profile topic all season since the league banned launching in March. A 15-yard penalty is enforced for anyone who leaves both feet before contact to spring forward and upward into an opponent and delivers a blow to the helmet with any part of his helmet.

Such tackles also are subject to fines, ejections and suspensions.

McKay emphasized that Steelers linebacker James Harrison's hit on Browns quarterback Colt McCoy on Dec. 8 is not the catalyst for further discussions.

Harrison became the first player suspended for such a hit under the NFL's new guidelines, and will miss Pittsburgh's game at San Francisco on Monday night.

"I don't like the fact one play would drive the discussion more than a need to do it for a bigger reason: a lot of plays that are putting players at risk," McKay said. "Our game has taken some real steps in a safety direction and we see, culturally, some modifications. We need to continue in that direction."

McKay said game officials have told him they are seeing fewer hits with the target areas the head or neck, and more tacklers are leading with their shoulders.

He said that's significant because it's not only offensive players who are in danger when an illegal hit is made.

"When we are trying to deal with an issue like the launch, we are trying to protect the runner and the hitter," he said. "Some hits, a defensive player is leading with his head and not using his arms and really is exposing himself to injury as a flagrant foul is committed."

Defenseless players cannot be hit in the head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm or shoulder. The definition of such players now includes those throwing a pass; attempting or completing a catch without having time to ward off or avoid contact; a runner whose forward progress has been stopped by a tackler; kickoff or punt returners while the ball is in the air; kickers or punters during a kick or a return; a quarterback during a change of possession; and a player who receives a blindside block from a blocker moving toward his own end zone.

Man to act as own lawyer in Yale doctor killing (AP)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? A Connecticut judge says a former physician charged with killing a Yale University doctor can act as his own lawyer at trial.

Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano on Wednesday approved 45-year-old Lishan Wang's request to represent himself, but also appointed a public defender to be on standby if Wang needs legal advice.

Wang is charged with murder and attempted murder for allegedly killing Dr. Vajinder (vah-JIN'-der) Toor and shooting at Toor's pregnant wife outside their Branford home last year. Toor's wife wasn't injured.

Police say the shooting apparently stemmed from a dispute the two men had while working together at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in New York.

Wang initially was ruled incompetent, but was later deemed competent after receiving psychiatric treatment.

A pre-trial hearing is set for Jan. 10.

And while the Darkness makes the bad in the world seem less, bad it is only lessened because it immerses you in that badness, making you tolerant. The LIGHT may make obvious the bad, but with that comes truth and sight.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
