NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? A Connecticut judge says a former physician charged with killing a Yale University doctor can act as his own lawyer at trial.
Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano on Wednesday approved 45-year-old Lishan Wang's request to represent himself, but also appointed a public defender to be on standby if Wang needs legal advice.
Wang is charged with murder and attempted murder for allegedly killing Dr. Vajinder (vah-JIN'-der) Toor and shooting at Toor's pregnant wife outside their Branford home last year. Toor's wife wasn't injured.
Police say the shooting apparently stemmed from a dispute the two men had while working together at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in New York.
Wang initially was ruled incompetent, but was later deemed competent after receiving psychiatric treatment.
A pre-trial hearing is set for Jan. 10.
