Wireless and networked audio is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Bluetooth and AirPlay allow you to play music on their smartphones, tablets, and computers through their speaker systems, and DLNA lets you play music that's stored on their computers through their Blu-ray players and HDTVs over their home network. There aren't many simple, out-of-the-box kits to enable wireless audio on both ends, though. The HP Wireless Audio kit changes that, by offering an all-in-one solution to stream music from your computer to your speakers. It's easy to set up, but at $99.99 (direct), it's expensive for a device that lets you do things you probably can already do via other methods.

The HP Wireless Audio kit has two parts: a transmitter and a receiver box. The transmitter is a basic USB device shaped like a large, wide flash drive. It's slightly wider than would be convenient, as it can block other ports close to the USB port it's plugged into. The receiver box is a 1.2- by 4.5- by 2.9-inch (HWD) rectangular device with a port for the power cable, RCA stereo outputs, a standard-size 3.5mm output, and an S/PDIF digital output. It also has a small pairing button and two lights to show it's plugged in and paired with the transmitter.

To sync the transmitter with the receiver, you need to install the HP Wireless Audio Manager software on your PC and plug in the transmitter. Once you install it, you can pair your computer (with the transmitter attached) to the receiver by pressing the pairing button on the receiver and running the software. The default audio driver will switch to the USB transmitter. From that point, anything you play on the computer will output through the receiver to whatever speakers or home theater system you hook up.

Despite the claims of the HP Wireless Audio product page on HP's web site, the audio driver only supports stereo sound, so you can't take full advantage of a surround sound system. In other words, it only sends two channels of audio to your speakers or receiver, meaning you can't use it to link your PC to your 5.1-channel system to make games like Bioshock more atmospheric.

HP claims the wireless audio device has a range of 100 feet, but I didn't see that in my tests. While it streamed audio flawlessly to a receiver placed 15 feet away, it couldn't keep a reliable connection to an HDTV across the Lab. Mixmaster Mike sounded clean through our test surround system near my desk, but the rest of the Beastie Boys popped and crackled and occasionally cut out through the screen 80 feet away. In fairness, the PCMag.com Labs have more wireless interference than most homes, but you should still be wary if you want to use the HP Wireless Audio across your house. Despite the reception issue, there didn't seem to be any noticeable latency between the computer and the receiver. If the signal stays strong, you won't have to wait between clicking play and hearing the music on your speakers.

HP Wireless Audio easily lets you connect your PC to your speaker system, but there are easier and better ways to do it. For example, if you have a big home theater system, it may already support AirPlay for Apple product users, and it almost certainly supports DLNA for accessing music shared on a network. If you have a recent Blu-ray player or HDTV, you can access your music through your home network. If you don't, you can get a good Blu-ray player for less than $150 like the Editors' Choice LG BP620 ($129.99, 4 stars) and add DLNA support and many other entertainment features to your sound system. If you don't have a full sound system but still want wireless music, the Editors' Choice Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars) offers a self-contained Bluetooth speaker and speakerphone that will work with your computer and mobile devices for the same price as the HP Wireless Audio kit.

Several watches and warnings are in effect. They include: A hurricane warning is in effect from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes; A tropical storm warning is in effect from Punto San Telmo west to Manzanillo; A hurricane watch is in effect from Punto San Telmo west to Manzanillo; and a tropical storm watch is in effect from Cabo Corrientes to San Blas.

Bud is expected to bring a lot of rainfall as it continues to head for a landfall. The National Hurricane Center expects total rain accumulations of 6 to 10 inches (152 to 254 mm) along the southwestern coast of Mexico with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches (381 mm). As always with heavy rainfall in this region, life-threatening flash floods and mudslides will be possible.

Along the coast a dangerous storm surge is expected to produce significant coastal flooding near and to the east of where the center of bud makes landfall. In addition, the southern and southwestern coasts of Mexico are expected to experience dangerous swells, surf and rip currents.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasters expect Bud to make landfall and then turnaround and head back out into the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Once Bud begins interacting with the coast, the Rapid decay is expected as western Mexico's high terrain separates the circulation of the storm. Bud is forecast to become a remnant low in 72 hours and dissipate in 96 hours.

This article looks at the international information security standard ISO 27001, and discusses whether implementing this will have a positive impact in other areas of business.

What Is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 is an international standard, the awarding of which recognises that an organisation has a strong information security policy in place, and that at the time of auditing all guidelines contained within said policy were being adhered to by the business and its employees. Clearly, the main purpose of looking to achieve ISO 27001 is to prove your business? information security credentials, however are there widespread benefits for businesses in addition to the primary gains?

We took a look at other aspects of business to see whether information security would have an influence.

Business Structure

ISO 27001 requires there to be a strong business framework in place for maintaining the information security standard. If a business is able to replicate this to an extent throughout their business, they could find themselves running a much more streamlined and efficient operation than ever before. ISO 27001 calls for everyone within the business to know their role and objectives clearly, and translated across a business of any size, that is surely a good thing.

Teamwork: The Sum Of The Parts

With the framework comes each individual departments? responsibilities regarding information security. As ISO 27001 is not exclusively reliant on IT functions in order to be successful, this causes other areas such as Human Resources and Payroll to up their game to ensure that they are falling into line with the standard. Having each department manager, or a designated person, in charge of each area?s information security interests will form a strong core throughout the organisation, and ensure that when put together, information security across the business is extremely strong.

This can also break down areas for senior managers to observe and act upon. It is a lot easier to tweak a policy or carry out re-training if you can identify one or two areas where it is going wrong, rather than have to overhaul the whole thing as it is one huge operation.

Accountability

A golden word, and for some businesses the holy grail, but ISO 27001 calls for accountability across the company in all areas. As this is something for which all businesses thrive to instil in employee teams, using ISO 27001 as the vehicle for that could prove to be an excellent method. As teams understand their responsibilities, they are likely to take far more care and pride in their work, which will then be translated across everything they do, from dealing with large corporate clients to ensuring they have a tidy desk.

Use ISO 27001 to boost all of your business, and you will begin to feel the benefits very soon.

The only thing I hate more than realizing I'm out of popcorn is realizing that I'm out of popcorn while a heated debate about an Apple?rumor is occurring. The current topic of discussion? If the next iPhone will have a larger display and?? if so?? whether it will have a new "widescreen"?display resolution.

This time around, things got started when the folks at 9to5 Mac wrote that?they've heard ??via mysterious, unnamed sources ??that the next iPhone will?"sport a new, larger display that is 3.999 inches diagonally."?

While a 4-inch screen is something?many?prior reports have claimed, there's more to this new rumor. According to 9to5 Mac,?Apple will not only increase the size of the display, but also will be "adding pixels."?The new iPhone display resolution would be 640 x 1136 ??which is the same width, but?176 pixels longer than the current iPhone model's display:

The screen will be the same?1.9632?inches wide, but will grow to?3.484?inches tall. This new resolution is very close to a?16:9 screen ratio.

This new screen aspect?ratio, declared many tech writers, can't possibly?happen?? just think of the developers and how much they'd struggle to adjust all the graphics in their apps to account for not only more dots, but a different screen shape. (Generally,?previous rumors presumed that the screen size would expand from 3.5?inches to 4?inches without changing the current 640 x 960?screen resolution, so there would be no software issues.)?

But as usual,?Jim Dalrymple ??who is known for both his beard and his insight on Apple ? becomes the voice of reason when calls attention to?a blog post by Will Hains, who appears well-versed on Apple software?design:

So, how hard it is for developers does not factor in Apple?s decision here. Rather, decisions are based on the resulting product; and then Apple works on making the transition as smooth as possible within that constraint. ?Do I want this to happen?? is a different question to ?Will it happen??

"I don?t agree with everything in this post,"?wrote Dalrymple, but he called Hains' explanation of?the reasons why developers wouldn't be too pained by a screen resolution change?"a good read."

So?while the smart money suggests that the next iPhone will have a larger screen, whether it gets a new aspect ratio (or indeed, why we would care about a longer, skinnier screen) is still a mystery. But at least we know that we're asking the right questions.

Despite carrying more passengers, U.S. airlines earned less in baggage fees last year, a result that has observers wondering: Are travelers carrying less ? or just carrying more on board?

Consider the numbers. According to the Department of Transportation, the 17 largest U.S. airlines earned $3.36 billion in baggage fees in 2011, down slightly?from $3.4 billion the year before. That was the first drop since the industry fully embraced ? la carte fees in 2008.

Meanwhile, U.S. airlines carried 730 million passengers in 2011, up 1.3 percent from the year before.

The numbers are even more dramatic for individual carriers. Last year, Delta Air Lines maintained the top spot in baggage fees, taking in almost $864 million. That was down 9.2 percent from the $952 million the carrier earned the year before, despite a 2.3 percent increase in passengers.

United Airlines, in the No. 5 spot, posted an even bigger decline in bag fees, dropping 11.8 percent to $276 million from $313 million, although that was concurrent with a 6.7 percent drop in passengers.

The reasons for the decline in revenue run the gamut, says Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com: ?The airlines are doing a better job of selling branded credit cards, which often waive bag fees; they?re giving out more elite perks; and people have finally figured out how to pack a little lighter.?

They?re also carrying more and bigger bags on board. ?There?s no doubt that if you?re not in the first half of the boarding process, you?re not going to find bin space,? said Seaney. ?People who try to cheat the system are carrying on their entire lives.?

That prospect is one reason Allegiant became the second U.S. carrier, after Spirit, to charge a fee for carry-on bags that don?t fit under passengers? seats. Announced in April, the airline is now charging variable fees ? $10 to $30 if paid in advance, $35 if paid at the airport ? to stow a bag in the overhead bin.

?If people are charged to check a bag and not charged to take it on the plane, the inclination is to try to put more and more and more into their carry-ons,? said Allegiant spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler. ?It slows the boarding process and it?s not fair to the people who do follow the rules.?

It may also prove to be a good source of ancillary revenue. Last year, the carrier earned $53.5 million in baggage fees, down slightly from $55 million in 2010. Spirit, on the other hand, earned almost $134 million, up 65 percent from the year before.?

For cash-strapped airlines, that sort of revenue must seem like manna from heaven, especially as airlines struggle to maintain profitability in tough times. To put it in perspective, without the $864 million that Delta earned in baggage fees last year, the airline?s net operating income of $854 million would instead have been a $10 million loss.

"Even with these impressive revenues from ancillary fees, some airlines are still reporting razor-thin profit margins thanks to increased fuel costs,? said George Hobica of AirfareWatchdog.com. ?Imagine what would have happened without them.?

Jurors in the campaign finance corruption trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards were sent home for the day on Monday without having reached a verdict.

A third day of deliberations will begin Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. ET in U.S. District Court in Greensboro, N.C., where Edwards ? a former U.S. senator and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee ? is charged with six felony counts of accepting about $1 million in illegal and unreported campaign donations from two wealthy supporters at a time when individual contributions were limited to $2,300.

Jurors appeared particularly interested in one of those donors, billionaire heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, asking the judge for seven exhibits that appeared to be related to the roughly $750,000 she gave an aide to Edwards to help conceal Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter, a videographer on his 2008 presidential campaign staff.

Mellon, who is 101 years old, didn't testify during the trial, but her attorney and financial adviser, Alex Forger, offered extensive testimony that Mellon knew that her donations were intended to fund the "Hunter problem" and weren't given as campaign contributions.

One of the exhibits they sought was a handwritten note from Mellon dated Sept. 17, 2007. Jurors requested a typed version, but U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles denied the request, saying one didn't exist, so they would have to do with the handwritten version. The contents of that note haven't been made public.
