Italian captives return home from Syria

ROME (AP) ? Two Italian engineers who were kidnapped and held captive for eight days in Syria have returned to Italy.

Domenico Tedeschi, 36, and Oriano Cantani, 64, told reporters at Rome's Fiumicino airport on Sunday that they still don't know the identity of their captors.

The two were seized by a group of masked men who intercepted their car en route to the airport July 18.

Cantani said the Syrian army organized their release, but did not give further details.

The two had been working for subcontractors of the Italian company Ansaldo Energia, which supplies and installs power generation plants.

The men were in good condition. They were met at the airport by family members and foreign ministry officials.

They are expected to speak with Italian prosecutors investigating the abduction.

Kung Fu Plaza, which is the oldest and most authentic Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, is the first Thai restaurant in Las Vegas to add young coconut as an off-menu chefs special. According to general manager, Alan Wong, the Las Vegas restaurant decided to add young coconut as part of its effort to introduce the natural health benefits of Asian cuisine.

Young coconuts have long been regarded for their nutritious and detoxification properties because the water they contain takes nine months to be filtered and stored away in the nut, says Wong. The science is sound. It is more nutritious than whole milk but contains no cholesterol and is healthier than orange juice with fewer calories.

Although it has taken longer than some have hoped, young coconut is starting to become a healthy alternative to the abundance of energy drinks on the market. The claim that it would one day outpace energy drinks originally came from Morton Satin, chief of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization five years ago.

Coconut is the very stuff of nature, biologically pure, full of natural sugars, salts, and vitamins that ward off fatigue, Satin had said. And it is the next wave of energy drinks.

One of the reasons he made the claim was because coconut water has high levels of electrolytes and potassium, between three and five times more than energy and sports drinks. But unlike energy drinks, it has no chemicals or preservatives.

I think young coconut would have taken off much faster in the United States if it could have been packaged, said Wong. But the almost magical properties of young coconut dissipate when the water is exposed to air. You cannot package it. You have to enjoy it fresh from the coconut itself.

After patrons at the restaurant enjoy the fresh coconut water, they scoop out and eat the meat of the coconut. The meat is said to contain healing properties because of the high amount of lauric acid. Although lauric acid has been found to increase total cholesterol, the increase is attributed to the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol. Lauric acid is proven to have positive effects on the cardiovascular system, and helps the body produce monolaurin, which research has shown to help the immune system.

There have been many remedies attributed to young coconut for hundreds and hundreds of years in Southern Asia, said Wong. It is one of the many reasons that Thai cooking incorporates coconut milk into many of its recipes. But young coconut is more powerful because it is served fresh, right from the coconut.

Wong said young coconut is often ordered with appetizers or desserts. Unlike mature a coconut, the young coconut meat is soft enough to eat with a spoon once the water is finished. Wong says his restaurant prefers to serve them fresh like they do in Thailand. Fresh young coconuts deliver more benefits.

The real reason to order fresh young coconuts, of course, has nothing to do with all of the rewarding benefits, smiled Wong. They are naturally sweet and taste great. You can enjoy it without feeling guilty.

Apple recently filed a patent for a controller that appeared online today according to Gamerevolution. This prototype device bears a striking similarity to the PS3?s controller, the Dualshock 3 and apparently is a ?schematic of a video game controller? for iOS devices as well as a video game system. This controller would then be compatible with iPhones, iPads and Apple TVs making gaming on those devices a far better experience. I personally would buy such a controller in a heartbeat because my biggest gripe with iPhone/iPad games is the terrible touch-screen controls that make most action games an utter chore.Now as far as the whole ?video game system? goes, no one knows what Apple has in the pipelines but it could very well be a new console or an Apple TV that can become a console with a few tweaks/upgrades. Since Apple has been dominating the whole handheld gaming scenario recently, it wouldn?t be too surprising to see them step into the console market.

Of course like MCV observes, this design could just be a placeholder as patents more often than not end up looking different when released.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? The producer of this year's Emmy Awards said it's a challenge to decide who to include in the ceremony's memorial tribute.

About three-dozen stars and other industry notables typically are honored in the "in memoriam" segment, although many more are deserving, executive producer Don Mischer said Friday.

He said he and the TV academy identify the late actors and other TV notables who will create an "emotional response" among Emmy viewers. That drew a wry observation from Jimmy Kimmel, who will host the Sept. 23 awards on ABC.

"I love that even in death, you're subject to a popularity contest," Kimmel said.

Omissions typically are more an issue for the Oscars than the Emmys. But some viewers objected when the death of "Taxi" star Jeff Conaway wasn't noted in last year's Emmy tribute.

Other than the host, the segment is consistently the audience's favorite part of the telecast, Mischer said told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

He was asked if Andy Griffith, who died July 3 at age 86, would get special attention because of the actor's beloved 1960s comedy, "The Andy Griffith Show," and his subsequent long-running legal drama, "Matlock."

There are ways to focus attention on individuals with a unique position in the industry, Mischer said, such as placing their tribute at the beginning or end of the memorial segment.

ABC late-night host Kimmel was asked if he was annoyed the network didn't ask him to host the Emmys the last time it aired the awards, in 2008. The emcee job went to five reality TV show hosts, including Jeff Probst of "Survivor" and Heidi Klum of "Project Runway," who were roundly panned.

Kimmel said he took some satisfaction in the outcome.

"I was able to look good by not doing anything at all. That's my goal in life, by the way," he said.

LONDON (AP) ? There will be monarchs, presidents, prime ministers ? and David Beckham. Friday's opening ceremony for the London Olympics is an A-list affair.

Among the 60,000 spectators at Olympic Stadium will be Queen Elizabeth II ? who as British head of state will officially open the games ? along with royals including Prince William and his wife Kate, and Prince Harry.

There's sure to be a sprinkling of showbiz royalty, too, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently filming in Britain, the most often-cited names.

The British government says more than 80 heads of state and government will be in the audience, including royalty from Brunei, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The U.S. will be represented by first lady Michelle Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will also attend.

Beckham, who helped bring the games to London and is widely rumored to have a role in the ceremony, will be there, and British newspapers have speculated that boxing great Muhammad Ali may also be involved.

The show, a 27 million pound ($42 million) spectacular titled "Isles of Wonder," will end with a performance by Paul McCartney.

Report: Unopened James Holmes Letter Detailed Plans for Massacre

According to a new report, James Holmes actually alerted a psychologist at the University of Colorado to his plans to commit mass murder... only the recipient never opened the package in question.

Fox News says the Colorado shooting suspect mailed a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" to the school's mail room, which is where police and FBI agent found it this week.

“There were drawings of what he was going to do in it - drawings and illustrations of the massacre," an insider with knowledge told Fox, adding that the photos drawn in a spiral-bound notebook’s pages depict a gun-wielding stick figure opening fire on other stick figures.

The package has reportedly been sitting in the mailroom since July 12 and was never delivered to the professor to whom it was addressed. It is now in the hands of the FBI.

It's unclear if the recipient ever had any contact with Holmes, but he or she treats patients at a psychiatry outpatient facility on campus. Holmes was a student at the school’s neuroscience doctoral program until a few weeks ago.

Lawyers: Audio is Sandusky phoning abuse victim

Lawyers representing a man claiming to be the unidentified shower victim of former football coach Jerry Sandusky say audio recordings are phone messages to their client.

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is awaiting sentencing for sexually abusing boys, including one identified in court documents as Victim 2.

Updated at 2:37 p.m. ET: HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Lawyers for a man who claims to be the unknown victim abused in a Penn State shower by Jerry Sandusky in a case that led to Joe Paterno's firing say he intends to sue the university.

The?lawyers also released two audio clips that they say are phone mail messages from Sandusky to their client, referred to in court documents as Victim 2.

In the messages from September 2011, which can be heard in the links below provided by the lawyers,?Sandusky talks about moving forward and having nothing to hide. In one message, Sandusky offers an invitation to?a Penn State football game. He ends both calls with "love you."

The lawyers, Andrew Shubin, Justine Andronici,?Matt Casey and Joel Feller,?said in a statement that they have done an extensive investigation and gathered "overwhelming evidence" on details of the abuse.

The statement reads in part:

"Our client suffered extensive sexual abuse over many years both before and after the 2001 incident Michael McQueary witnessed in the Penn State Lasch building shower. Penn State has now admitted and there is no longer any question that its top officials could have and should have prevented these acts. Jerry Sandusky's abuse of Victim 2 and other children is a direct result of a conspiracy to conceal Sandusky's conduct and the decisions by top Penn State officials that facilitated and enabled his access to victims. We intend to file a civil lawsuit against Penn State University and others and to hold them accountable for the egregious and reckless conduct that facilitated the horrific abuse our client suffered.

Our client has to live the rest of his life not only dealing with the effects of Sandusky's childhood sexual abuse, but also with the knowledge that many powerful adults, including those at the highest levels of Penn State, put their own interests and the interests of a child predator above their legal obligations to protect him."

Penn State says it cannot comment on pending litigation.

Prosecutors have said they don't know the identity of the boy molested by Sandusky in 2001. The encounter was spotted by former graduate assistant football coach, Mike McQueary, who reported the abuse to school officials, including Paterno, but none of them told police. McQueary said he saw Sandusky and the boy -- now a grown man -- in an "extremely sexual" position in a locker room shower one night. He was a key prosecution witness at Sandusky's trial.

The victim is not named in the attorneys' statement.

Sandusky awaits sentencing after being convicted in June of 45 sex abuse counts related to molesting 10 boys, including Victim 2.

A seven-month investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, commissioned by Penn State, concluded that Paterno, then-university President Graham Spanier and two other top Penn State administrators?concealed abuse by Sandusky to avoid bad publicity, thereby enabling Sandusky's crimes to continue.

"?Jere. Um. I am probably not going to be able to get a hold of anybody. Um. Uh. Probably ought to just go forward. Uh. I would be very firm and express my feelings, uh, upfront. Um. Hope you get this message. Thanks."

Parachutist Fearless Felix jumps from 18 miles

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner has done it again.

The 43-year-old Austrian plunged to Earth from an altitude of about 96,640 feet Wednesday ? more than 18 miles. He landed safely near Roswell, N.M.

It's the second stratospheric leap for "Fearless Felix". He's aiming for a record-breaking jump from 125,000 feet, or 23 miles, in another month. He hopes to go supersonic, breaking the speed of sound with just his body.

Longtime record-holder Joe Kittinger jumped from 102,800 feet in 1960 for the Air Force. Kittinger monitored Wednesday's test jump from Roswell.

Just like in March, Baumgartner ascended in an enclosed capsule lifted by a giant helium balloon. He wore a full-pressure suit and used parachutes.

NASA is paying close attention to this Red Bull-funded project.
