London's Metropolitan Police said on Saturday that they were planning to monitor a vigil for Mark Duggan, the man who was shot dead by police a year ago sparking riots across England.
Duggan, 29, was shot in the chest in Tottenham, north London on August 4 last year.
Local protests against the shooting turned violent and within days a wave of looting and arson had spread across English cities, killing five people and damaging property worth millions of pounds.
A memorial service for Duggan is due to be held at Tottenham Town Hall at 5 pm (1600 GMT) on Sunday and Scotland Yard said there would be a "visible policing presence" in the area.
"We are responsive and sensitive to the events of last August," a spokesman said.
"To provide reassurance to the local communities, the local neighbourhood policing teams will be on duty this weekend, patrolling on foot and visiting local businesses and providing a local visible policing presence.
"We are aware of the event on Sunday marking the anniversary and have been in discussion with the organisers."
Duggan's mother made a plea for justice on Friday, saying the family had still not received a full explanation of how her son died.
"Thirty-one police officers surrounded Mark and he was shot twice -- why?" Pam Duggan said in a statement.
"One of the last things my partner, Mark's dad, said before he died a few weeks ago was that he wanted justice for his son."
A provisional date for an inquest -- legal hearings held in Britain to examine sudden or unexplained deaths -- into Duggan's death has been set for January 2013.
Reports at the time that the father-of-four had fired at officers were dismissed after tests found that a bullet which lodged itself in one officer's radio was police issue.
A non-police issue handgun, converted from a blank-firing pistol to one that shoots live rounds, was recovered close to the scene.
His family have questioned why officers had shot him in the chest rather than a part of the body that would not necessarily have resulted in a lethal injury.
Scotland Yard were also forced to apologise to Duggan's parents after an inquiry found that police had failed to formally notify the family of his death.
